Winston-Salem, N.C. - Juniors Sarah Kozey and Melanie Schneider both notched a goal and an assist en route to helping the Wake Forest women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over UNC Greensboro in the home opener Monday, at Spry Stadium.
Kozey wasted no time against UNCG, scoring off the first shot, with a long blast from the left wing just four minutes in. The assist came from Schneider. The goal marks Kozey's second of the season and the 17th in her career, which puts her fourth on the Wake Forest career goals list.
The Deacs kept the momentum, controlling possession and creating good opportunities in front of the box, notching nine shots before UNCG was able to sneak the ball past freshman netminder Heather Currie from a free kick in the 24th minute. Going into the half with the score tied at one each, Wake Forest continued to put pressure on the Spartan offense, closing out the period with 12 shots and five corners.
As the second stanza began, the Deacs continued to control the game, with Schneider finding the net in the 57th minute, with an assist from Kozey and Taylor Toombs. Just two minutes later, sophomore Elizabeth Remy was able widen the gap as she answered Schneider's goal with one of her own. But in the 70th minute, UNCG was able to bring the ball forward and past the Deacon defenders as Mary Kate Towne put the ball behind Ruth Ann Supcia.
Playing between the rails in the second half for the Deacs, Supcia saw just three shots, none which resulted in a save, while Currie saw four and took home two saves in the first. Playing for the Spartans, Jennifer Stillman chalked up six saves, while in the second, Katherine Ryan got two.
Offensively, the Deacs were lead by Toombs, who posted nine shots, five on goal, while Schneider was not far behind with four of her own.
The Deacs are now 1-0-1 on the season, while UNCG moves to 1-1-0. Wake Forest will return to the field at the Charlotte tournament this weekend, where the Demon Deacons will take on Virginia Commonwealth on Friday at 5 p.m. and Mississippi at 1 p.m on Sunday.
