Winston-Salem, N.C - A steady downpour didn't deter the Wake Forest women's soccer team from defeating Davidson, 4-1, Friday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons, who are 5-1-1 overall, had three freshmen find the back of the net against the Wildcats.
In the first half of the game, the Deacs came out strong, taking the reigns early, despite the bad weather. Kristina Hanley was the first of the freshmen to score, finding the back of the cage after receiving a pass from Jayme Liegh Cargnoni, who brought the ball into the box. The goal marks the first for Hanley, while the assist was the first of two for Cargnoni.
Four minutes after the goal by Hanley, Sarah Kozey was able to put the Deacs ahead by one more, after Taylor Toombs crossed the ball, helping the junior to her seventh goal of the season. Kozey now has 22 career goals, which is just one away from moving her into the fourth place position in the Deacon record books.
Davidson was able to rally back as Kara Koehrn dribbled through the Wake defense and found the net, despite a strong diving attempt by Heather Currie. Closing out the half, the Deacs were able to regain control taking nine shots in the final 15 minutes of the half.
Opening the second stanza of the game, Wake Forest continued to dominate from the start, taking five shots in the first five minutes. On the sixth shot, freshman Maggie Horne connected after receiving a long cross from Cargnoni. With six minutes left in the game, the Deacs were able to up the score once again as Megan Upchurch tossed the ball to Amber Bettenhausen at the top of an empty box, where she was able to easily slip the ball past the Wildcat keeper.
Davidson made an attempt at a comeback with two minutes left in the game, taking a solid shot. Currie was able to grab the save, but the weather interjected and the ball slipped out from her hands, leaving it to be finished off by Heidi Wilbrandt, putting the final score at 4-2.
As a team, the Deacs out-shot the Wildcats, 24-9, with Melanie Schneider leading Wake with seven shots. Minding the net for the entire 90 minutes, Currie picked up the win with three saves, while Sarah Hobart took the loss with eight saves for Davidson.
The Deacs will return to Spry Stadium on Sunday as they face Princeton at 1 p.m.
