Women's Soccer Shuts Out #21 Princeton, 1-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Melanie Schneider scored the Demon Deacon's only goal of the game, helping the Wake Forest women's soccer team shutout the #21 Princeton Tigers, 1-0. The victory marks the first time this season that the Deacons have defeated a ranked opponent and improves Wake Forest's record to 6-1-1, while the Tigers fall to 4-1.
In the opening stanza, the Deacs were able to gain possession and maintain it through the majority of the half. In the 17th minute, Schneider was brought the ball into the box, finding one of her two shots on goal. With a diving save by Emily Vogelzang, the ball was released and the Deacs again found possession. Moments after the kick-off, Princeton committed a foul just outside the center of the box. Schneider took the kick for Wake, which bounced off the rails, slipped past the keeper and rolled in, putting the Deacs up 1-0.
The Tigers opened up the second half putting pressure on the Deacs from the beginning and continued for the duration. In the 51st minute Wake had a close call as Deacon netminder Heather Currie was pulled out by Janine Willis. With Currie high in the box, the Ashley Spooner and Tara Caldwell were able to keep the ball out of the net, helping the Deacs regain possession. Another close call ensued with just 2 minutes remaining when Willis took a solid shot that Currie managed to grab. Just moments later in the final minute, the Tigers knocked off one more shot but the Deacs cleared it, securing the victory.
Picking up her second shutout of the season, Currie played the entire 90-minute game, notching seven saves. For the Tigers, Vogelzang picked up her first loss of the season with five saves. As a team, the Deacs were out-shot, 13-11, while Wake took eight corners to Princeton's six.
Wake Forest will open up ACC competition on Thursday, Sept. 23 against Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. The meeting between the two teams will be the first since the 2000 season where Wake Forest won, 5-0.
