CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Wake Forest senior Scott Sealy scored four minutes into the second overtime to give the Demon Deacons a hard fought, but thrilling 1-0 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in college men's soccer action from the Carolina/Nike Classic at Fetzer Field Friday night.
The Demon Deacons (2-0-1) earned a throw-in deep inside the VCU (1-2-0) defending third. Sophomore Mark Ellington threw the ball to senior Ryan Caugherty, who settled and laid the ball off the senior Tomy Szczypiorski. Szczypiorski then fired a cross to Sealy who rose and headed home the gamewinner at the 104:00 minute mark.
The goal is Sealy's third of the season and 29th for his career. He now moves into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time goal scoring list. Sealy trails only Ben Stafford (36), Jeremiah White (37) and Mark Erwin (68).
While most of the game was played in the midfield, both teams did create some solid scoring chances late in regulation and overtime.
Wake Forest had a golden opportunity with only 3:46 left in regulation. Ellington was fouled just inside the penalty area. Senior Stephen Keel took the ensuing penalty kick. The forward, who buried a penalty kick in the exhibition victory over Charlotte, drilled the left bar.
The Demon Deacons nearly scored against with just over a minute left in regular time. Ellington made a great effort to send the ball to Sealy. The forward chased down the ball beat the lone VCU defender, but his blast from just outside the box glanced off the cross bar.
The Rams broke through just minutes into overtime. Dominic Oduro streaked through the Demon Deacon defense and went one-on-one with Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards, but Edwards stoned the VCU forward to keep the match scoreless.
Edwards went the distance in the net for Wake Forest and registered his second career shutout in only his third career start. The sophomore picked up five saves on the evening.
The Deacs thoroughly controlled play in the first 90 minutes. The Rams played most of the opening 45-minutes with at least nine players behind the ball. Wake Forest did manage a couple quality scoring chances despite the packed VCU defense.
Sophomore Steven Curfman beat a pair of Ram defenders on the left wing and crossed to a Keel, whose header sailed just over the cross bar. Just minutes later, senior Amir Lowery played the ball deep into VCU's penalty area to Keel. The senior forward turned and whipped a cross toward the back post to Curfman, but his header went just wide.
The Demon Deacons return to action in the Nike Carolina Classic on Sunday afternoon against Florida International. Kickoff with the Golden Panthers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
