CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Wake Forest junior Justin Moose scored 5:59 into the first overtime to give the fifth-ranked Demon Deacons a 3-2 victory over Florida International in men's college soccer action from the Nike/Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field Sunday afternoon. The win, which was the second straight in overtime, ensured the Nike/Carolina Classic Championship for the Deacs.
Senior Scott Sealy, as he was all weekend, was right in the middle of the winning goal. With his back to the FIU goal, Sealy laid the ball off to fellow senior James Riley, who slotted the ball across the penalty area to a completely uncovered Moose. The midfielder calmly slipped the ball under Golden Panther goalkeeper Shawn Crowe.
The Deacs trailed the Golden Panthers, 1-0, at halftime despite dominating play and outshooting FIU, 9-3. Wake Forest continued to penetrate the Golden Panther defense and were finally awarded early in the second-stanza.
Sealy evened the match with his fourth goal of the season at 50:33 of the second-half. Senior Amir Lowery found Sealy all alone in the FIU penalty area. Sealy turned and slotted the ball under Crowe into the right corner of the net.
The Demon Deacons grabbed the lead just moments later. Junior Michael Parkhurst gained possession in the Deacs defending third and carried the ball into the Golden Panther side of the pitch. Parkhurst then spotted Moose, who played a wonderful attacking ball onto Sealy. The forward then dribbled past Crowe and fired the ball into the open net for his second goal of the game and fifth of the season.
The Demon Deacons appeared as though they would capture the match in regulation time, but the Golden Panthers tied the match, 2-2, at the 85:18 mark of the second-half. Carron Williams scored on a header off an assist from Oscar Gil.
With the two goals on Sunday, Sealy became only the fourth place in Wake Forest history to eclipse 30 career goals. Sealy joins Ben Stafford (36), Jeremiah White (37) and Mark Erwin (68). Sealy also moved into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time points list with 74 career points, again trailing Stafford, White and Erwin.
The Demon Deacs improve to 3-0-1 on the season, while the Golden Panthers drop to 1-1-0 on the season. FIU opened the tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory over North Carolina.
Wake Forest held significant advantages in both shots, 20-5, and corner kicks, 10-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards played the entire 90 minutes and registered three saves to earn his third victory off the season for the Deacs.
Sealy had a brilliant scoring chance just minutes into the second-half. Riley and senior Stephen Keel combined on a beautiful combination play on the right wing. Keel swerved in a cross to Sealy, whose header was stopped by a sprawling Crowe.
The Demon Deacons had a pair of golden scoring chances in the game's first 10 minutes. Keel tracked down a ball played in from Lowery, but Keel's attempt went wide of the open goal.
Wake Forest had four players named to the Nike/Carolina Classic All-Tournament Team including Riley, Parkhurst, Sealy and Moose.
The Demon Deacons return to action in their ACC and Spry Stadium opener against Virginia. Kickoff with the Cavaliers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
