Valerie Rydberg Named ACC Volleyball Player of the Week

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Junior Valerie Rydberg was named the ACC Volleyball Player of the Week after leading the Wake Forest volleyball team to two wins over the weekend, including the program's first victory over a ranked opponent.
Rydberg, an outside hitter, led the Deacs both offensively and defensively, notching two double-doubles over the weekend, including 16 kills against both Purdue and UT Martin. In just nine games, she put up an impressive 41 kills, 37 assists and seven service aces, which earned her a spot on the Dominio's Pizza Lady Vols Classic All-Tournament Team.
"We are very proud of Valerie's performance this past weekend," said head coach Valorie Baker. "She was an integral part of the team's victories over Purdue and UT Martin and is most deserving of this honor."
On the weekend, Wake Forest was 2-1, defeating #24 Purdue, 30-22, 30-19, 30-27. This marked the first time that the Demon Deacons have swept a ranked opponent 3-0. The loss came on against Tennessee on Friday night, while the second win was over UT Martin, 3-0.
The Deacs are now 5-1 overall and will travel to the Wright State Tournament, Sept. 18-19, before entering ACC competition on Friday, Sept. 24 against Virginia.
