Wake Forest Volleyball Falls to #17 Louisville in Five

Dayton, Ohio - The Wake Forest volleyball team came back from a two game deficit, taking #17 Louisville into a fifth, but it wasn't enough as the Demon Deacons fell to the Cardinals, 3-2 (19-30, 25-30, 30-20, 32-30, 16-18). Seniors Morgan Havig, Kim Stern and junior Valerie Rydberg all posted 14 kills, as Stern notched her first double-double of the season with 12 digs.
The Deacs fell in the first two games, only putting down 18 kills to the Cardinals 33. Coming back in the third, the Deacs were able to pick it up and raise their hitting percentage to .375 with 16 kills, taking the game 30-20. In the fourth game, the Deacs kept it close, pulling out the victory 32-30. In the fifth, Wake Forest once again pressured the Cardinals taking them point for point, but fell short as Louisville took the match, 16-18.
"Our team rebounded after the second game and really pulled it together," Wake Forest head coach Valorie Baker said. "We were able to compete with a top ranked team, taking them point for point in the fifth game. Overall, it was a really good match and it could have been anyone's, it just fell for Louisville this afternoon."
As a team, the Deacs knocked down 63 kills to the Cardinals 76, while defensively Wake Forest had 59 digs to Louisville's 58. With 50 of the team's 55 assists, junior Erin Borhart posted the match-high. Natasha Schaefer also had a strong outing for the Deacs with 17 digs. In addition to her career-high 14 kills, Havig posted five block assists and one solo block.
Wake Forest is now 5-2 overall and will return to the court for the second match of the Raider Classic tonight at 5 p.m. against Morehead State.
