Wake Forest Volleyball Falls To Maryland, 3-1

Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest volleyball fell to Maryland, 3-1 (24-30, 27-30, 30-28, 23-30) Saturday night. The loss marked the second for the Deacons this the weekend. They fall to 8-4 on the season, 0-2 in ACC play, while Maryland improves to 6-6, 1-1 in ACC action.
Maryland took the first game, 30-24, despite four kills each by Valerie Rydberg and Kim Stern. Christy Williams served first for the Deacons, after a kill from Rydberg gave the Deacons the first points of the match. Game one remained close as the teams went nearly point for point until the Terps posted six unanswered points. Wake Forest called a time out and came out strong. Stern slipped the ball over two blockers' heads to bring the Deacons within six. Natasha Schaefer served for the Deacons, trailing 19-25. The minute and a half rally went to the Deacs as a solo block from Williams put Wake Forest within five. Another block from Williams and one from Lauren Peterson made the game 22-25. Their efforts were not enough as Maryland served four unanswered points and ended the game on block that landed out of bounds by the Deacons.
The second game went to Maryland as well, 30-27. Wake Forest jumped ahead early but swapped points with the Terps for the first 12 points of the game. The Deacs went on a 10-5 run to go ahead 15-10. Maryland did not overcome the Wake Forest lead until Maria DiLivio killed to put the Terps ahead, 26-25. Maryland went on a 4-2 run to take the game on a service ace by Stephanie Doiron.
In game three, Wake Forest scored three points to open the game. A powerful kill by Peterson put the Deacons ahead, 6-4. The teams swapped point for point until Maryland went on a four point run, to take their first lead of the game, 11-9. The Deacons answered to tie the game at 11, but Maryland killed to regain the lead, 12-11. Two Terps errors tied the game at 14, and two more points for the Deacons gave them the 16-14 lead before Maryland called a timeout. Williams answered with a perfect block down the middle as the Deacons continued on a six point run. Maryland called another time out when the scoreboard read 19-14 Wake Forest. After a 4-1 run by the Terps, head coach Valerie Baker decided to talk things over with her Deacons. Erin Borhart turned and pushed the ball into the middle of the Maryland defense to keep the Deacons ahead 23-20. A diving dig by Rydberg and a kill by Peterson, gave the Deacons the 28-22 lead. Maryland rebounded, scoring three consecutive points forcing Baker to call another timeout. The Terps persevered and brought the game within three, 29-28, but a determined Williams killed to give Wake Forest the game, 30-28.
Game four marked the only time in the match where Maryland took the first lead, but not for long as the Deacons tied the game, 1-1. A kill by Rydberg bounced off a Maryland defender and into the balcony, to keep Maryland only two points ahead, 5-3. Another kill by Rydberg tied the game at eight. When the Terrapins went ahead, 15-11, Baker called a timeout. The Terps continued to dominate, going on an 11-4 run. Four unanswered points by the Deacons brought the score to 22-19 and Maryland called a timeout. The Terps went on a 3-1 run before Williams killed to bring the Deacs back within five. Wake Forest called their final timeout. The Terps took game four, 30-23 and the match, 3-1.
Wake Forest returns to action Friday, Oct. 1 at Miami. Game time is 7 p.m.
