Charlotte, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer team traveled to Charlotte, N.C. for a tournament game against Virginia Commonwealth. The Deacons won the contest 5-2 and improve to 2-0-1 on the season. VCU falls to 1-2-0. Wake Forest jumped on the board early with a goal from Melanie Schneider nine minutes into the game. Schneider slipped her second goal of the season past Rams goal keeper Emily Niman to give the Deacons the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Kristen Kemp notched her first goal of the season to give Wake Forest a two goal advantage. Nichole Lecznar was credited with the assist. A series of fouls and a yellow card on Keisha Garrick consumed the next ten minutes of play, until Schneider connected for her second goal of the game. Three minutes later, Sarah Kozey capitalized on her second shot of the day, for a four goal Deacon advantage. VCU's Leigh Anthony scored consecutive goals at the 39:02 and the 58:56 marks, to bring the Ram's within two. Taylor Toombs found Schneider for the final goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining. Wake Forest and VCU were nearly even in shots, 17 by the Deacs and 16 by the Rams. Deacon goal keepers split time equally in the net. Ruth Ann Supica contributed three saves in first half action, while Heather Currie stepped into the Deacon line up for two saves in the second period. Lindsey Jaco also received a yellow card. The Deacons continue tournament action in Charlotte with a game against Mississippi on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
