COLUMBUS, Ohio - The fourth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team used a late goal from Justin Moose to help earn a 2-2 draw against 14th-ranked Penn State and secure the Ohio State Classic Championship Sunday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons (1-0-1) grabbed an early lead at the 24:14 mark of the first-half. Senior Scott Sealy scored his second goal of the season on an assist from fellow senior James Riley. Sealy buried the shot from just inside the top of the box into the lower left corner of the net.
With the goal, Sealy has now tallied 28 goals for his career -- good for a tie with Raimo deVries for fourth place all-time. Sealy also moved into fifth place on the all-time points list.
The Nittany Lions answered just minutes later. Simon Omekanda buried a penalty kick at the 28:15 mark.
Penn State grabbed the lead midway through the second-half. Pasi Karppinen scored off a free-kick off an assist from Brian Devlin in the 56th minute.
Wake Forest would equalize in the 84th minute. Moose scored his first goal of the season. Sophomore Ryan Solle was creditied with the assist.
Penn State -- who tied ACC rival North Carolina Friday night -- held a slim advantage in shots, 17-16, while the Deacs had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-5.
Sophomore Brian Edwards played all 110:00 minutes between the pipes and recorded five saves.
Wake Forest posted a 1-0-1 record over the weekend to earn the title, while the Nittany Lions posted an 0-0-2 record. North Carolina was also 1-0-1, while Ohio State was 0-2-0.
Wake Forest returns to action next weekend in the Nike/Carolina Classic. The Demon Deacons will face VCU and Florida International.
