Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team embarks on a pair of road games starting on Thursday against #6/12 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The Deacs are coming off a strong 86-71 victory over Clemson on Sunday afternoon, which upped their ACC record to 2-3 and increased the overall record to 13-5. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
Against the Tigers, junior Liz Strunk pounded out a career-high 30 points, becoming the second Deac this season (and 21st overall) to hit that mark. Senior Erin Ferrell also had a strong night, pulling 15 down off the glass and adding 14 points for her fifth double double of the season (sixth career).
The series between the Deacs and the Tar Heels is one of the oldest in school history. Having met a total of 62 times, Wake Forest is currently on a one game winning streak after defeating the then-#10/11 Tar Heels, 69-67, at the Joel Coliseum Jan. 26, 2004. The victory for the Deacs was the fourth time in the last five years the Wake has taken the win at the Joel and improves the overall record in the series to 51-12 overall. On the road, Wake has not fared as well, winning three times with the most recent a 77-65 win during the 1990-91 season.
The Tar Heels enter the game on a high note after defeating #1/1 Duke on Monday night on ESPN2. The win is the first over a #1 ranked opponent in the programs history and improves Carolina to 15-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. Against the Blue Devils three players put up double figures, including Ivory Latta with 13 points. La'Tangela Atkinson earned a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Erlana Larkins also pulled 10 off the glass. As a team, Carolina is averaging 79.8 points per game for a scoring margin of +23.8, while the Deacs boast a 75.7 scoring average and a margin of 15.1.
After the game against North Carolina, the Deacs will travel to Virginia Tech on Monday, Jan. 31, to face the ACC newcomers in their second televised game of the season.
