Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team continues its two game road swing Monday night against ACC newcomers Virginia Tech. The Demon Deacons are coming off an 83-61 loss to #5/12 North Carolina and the Hokies are coming off a 70-67 loss to Virginia.
Against the Tar Heels, Cotelia Bond-Young picked up a team-high 14 points, 13 of which were scored in the first half and Porsche' Jones added 12 of her own, along with five boards. As a team, Wake did not play as well as expected, shooting a season-low 27.7 percent from the field and was outrebounded 40 to 56.
The game against the Hokies will also mark the second game of the season that will be televised regionally on Fox Sports South. Earlier in the season, Wake made an appearance on TV against NC State in the first ACC game of the season.
The meeting will be the first in the conference and just the third overall between the two teams. Playing once during the 1978-79 season, Wake defeated Virginia Tech, 75-65, but picking up the series again last season, Wake did not leave the game with the same outcome. Meeting in the championship game of the Lady Luck Classic, the Deacs held a six-point lead at halftime over then-15th ranked and undefeated Virginia Tech, but poor free throw shooting in the second half proved too costly and the Hokies pulled away late for a 70-59 victory. Liz Strunk paced the Deacs with a career-high tying 16 points, 12 of which came in the second half and Erin Ferrell added 14.
Entering the seventh game of ACC competition last season, the Deacs carried a 1-4 conference record, with the only victory coming off of NC State. Overall, the Deacs had an 8-8 record, which included victories over Hampton, NC A&T and Princeton -- all teams that the Deacs have defeated this season.
