Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team returns home to face the University of Virginia in the second ACC game this week, Thursday night in Joel Coliseum. Undefeated at home this year, the Demon Deacons will look to `Jam the Joel' and earn their eighth consecutive home victory. Tickets for the game are just one dollar. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The meeting with the Cavaliers will be the 57th overall, with the Demon Deacons trailing in the series 2-54. The most recent victory for Wake Forest was a 77-66 victory on Jan. 5, 2003, marking the first time in 49 meetings that the Deacs emerged victorious. Since that game during the 2002-03 season, the two teams have met three times, with Virginia taking home all the victories.
Both Wake Forest and UVa enter the game with a 10-3 overall records, but for Virginia, Thursday's game will be the first conference match-up. The Cavs enter the game coming off a 66-49 victory over South Carolina on Jan. 2, while senior Erin Ferrell and the rest of the Demon Deacons look to rebound from a 81-50 loss to NC State.
Against the Pack, Ferell put up the team-high 15 points and seven boards, in addition to dishing out three assists. On the season, the Gaithersburg, Md. native is averaging 7.8 boards per game, which ranks her among the top five in the ACC. Also on the ACC leaderboard is junior Cotelia Bond-Young, who is leading the conference in 3-pointers made with 3.17 per game.
Three seniors lead the Cavaliers into the first ACC game of the season: Brandi Teamer who is averaging 14.8 points per game, LaTonya Blue with 10.7 points per game and Jocelyn Logan-Friend who adds 9.1 ppg and a team-best 7.1 rpg. As a team, UVa out-scores its opponents by +14.2 points and out-rebounds foes by +7.3 boards.
A win for the Deacs would mark the ACC home opener victory since the 1999-2000 season when the Deacs started the conference season at home against Florida State with a 64-59 victory.
