Fourth Quarter Comebacks In The Grobe Era...
Trailing Clemson by six, Wake Forest scored 10 points in the final quarter to register its sixth fourth quarter comeback under Grobe. The Deacons last fourth quarter comeback came against Boston College in 2004 when they trailed 14-10 and won 17-14. In 2003, the Deacs found themselves down to the Eagles at Boston College, 21-12, and won 32-28. In 2002, the Deacons entered the final quarter down one at Georgia Tech, 14-13, and won 24-21. Also in 2002, the Deacons trailed Navy 21-20 and defeated the Midshipmen 30-27. The Deacons largest comeback in the fourth quarter under Grobe came in 2001 when the Deacons trailed North Carolina 31-14, before scoring 18 points to win 32-31.
Abbate Makes The Pick...
Jon Abbate's interception on the first drive of the game was his first of the year and his second of his career. It marked the first time this season the Deacon defense forced a turnover on the game's opening drive. It led to a Cory Randolph rushing touchdown, the first offensive points following an opponent turnover this year.
Twice In the Same Quarter...
Abbate's second interception marked the first time a Wake Forest player had two interceptions in the same game since November 2002 when Warren Braxton did it against Navy. Three different Deacons accomplished the feat in 2002. Coincidentally, Braxton also made his interceptions in the same quarter.
Randolph Rushes For Score...
Cory Randolph's rushing touchdown in the first quarter was his first since the East Carolina game last year. He was the team's third-leading rusher in 2004 with 287 yards on 92 carries.
Tereshinski Hauls In First Catch...
John Tereshinski's first quarter reception was his first catch of the season -- a five-yard completion. He finished the day with a career-high five catches for 24 yards.
Sneaky On Fourth Down...
Cory Randolph's two-yard sneak on fourth down early in the fourth quarter was Wake Forest's 4th successful 4th down conversion of the season in 10 attempts. The drive resulted in a 33-yard field goal by Sam Swank.
Randolph to Moore Touchdown...
Cory Randolph's 74-yard touchdown pass to Kenneth Moore was Moore's first reception of the season, the longest play from scrimmage this season by the Deacons and the ninth-longest pass play in Wake Forest history. It was the longest pass play since last year's Clemson game when Benjamin Mauk hit Jason Anderson for an 85-yard score. It was also Randolph's first passing touchdown since the Boston College game last season, the 12th of his career.
Curry Blocks Clemson Punt...
Aaron Curry's blocked punt in the second quarter was the first of his career. It was the second for the Deacons in three weeks. Alphonso Smith blocked an East Carolina punt on September 17.
Randolph Nearly Perfect In First Half...
Cory Randolph started the game 8-for-10 for 147 yards and two touchdowns. That equated to a passing efficiency of 123.68. Through the first four games, the Deacons had a season passing efficiency of 88.42.
Randolph to Morton Touchdown...
Cory Randolph's 34-yard touchdown strike to Nate Morton in the second quarter was Randolph's second touchdown pass of the day. It was Morton's first touchdown reception of the season and second of his career. It was Randolph's first multi-touchdown day and Morton's first touchdown catch since last year's East Carolina game.
Randolph to Marion Touchdown...
Cory Randolph's third touchdown pass of the game came on a six yard strike to Kevin Marion gave the Deacons the final lead of the game. The touchdown pass came with just 33 seconds left in the game.
12th-Largest Crowd In Groves Stadium History...
Today's announced crowd of 32,153 was the 12th-largest crowd in Groves Stadium history, the fifth-largest crowd in the Jim Grobe era.
Plackemeier Booms Career-Long 74-Yarder...
Ryan Plackemeier's 74-yard punt on the final play of the first half was officially the second-longest punt in Wake Forest history, the longest since Wayne Wolff's 75-yarder in 1960. It was, therefore, a career-long punt for Plackemeier, eclipsing the 69-yard blast against Maryland last season. It was Plackemeier's first career punt of 70-plus yards. Later, he hit a 55-yarder, his and 54th punt of 50-plus yards.
Barclay Record Book Update...
Chris Barclay continues to climb the ACC and Wake Forest record books. ... he finished with 105 rushing yards today and currently stands at 3,366 for his career. He is in second place in Wake Forest history in that category, yards behind 405 first place. Among all ACC players, he passed Kelvin Bryant (North Carolina), Charlie Wysocki (Maryland), Michael Ramseur (Wake Forest), and Terry Kirby (Virginia) for 15th place. He needs 24 yards to catch Tiki Barber (Virginia) for 14th place.
... he finished with 22 carries. He is in third place in Wake Forest history in that category, 53 carries behind Michael Ramseur for second place.
The Grobe Era Record Book...
The Deacons managed just 133 rushing yards against the Tigers, which tied for the fourth-lowest total under head coach Jim Grobe. The 222 passing yards amassed marked the fourth most passing yards by a Grobe team. Cory Randolph's three touchdown passes marked the most touchdown passes thrown in a Deacon game. The previous mark was two which occurred last against Boston College in 2004. The 20 completions set a new Grobe Era high besting the 19 completed passes in 2002 at Georgia Tech. Randolph's 222 yards of passing is the fourth most a quarterback has thrown in a single game. Jon Abbate's two interceptions tied him with the most in a single game.
