Black Evens Fall World Series With 11-2 Rout

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Redshirt sophomore Eric Williams and freshman Dustin Hood each had a pair of hits to lead the Black to an 11-2 rout over the Gold in the second game of the 2005 Black & Gold World Series.
Williams, a transfer from Arizona State, reached base all four plate appearances. The centerfielder walked his first time up, then stole second and eventually came around to score on junior Dan Rosaia's RBI single.
Hood and senior Casey Sterk followed with RBI singles and sophomore Nathan Frazier capped off the seven-run inning with a two-run double to the base of the outfield wall.
The Black increased its lead to 10-1 on sophomore Brett Linnenkohl's two-run single in the third inning.
The nine-run cushion was more than enough for the Black. Junior Charlie Mellies went 4.0 solid innings. The right-handed hurler scattered four hits, struckout one and yielded one earned run. Junior Sean Souders tossed the final 2.0 innings and allowed just one earned run on one hit.
Junior Brian Shust had a multi-hit game for the second straight day. The outfielder went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore Andy Goff, freshman Tyler Smith and junior Matt Antonelli each added singles.
Smith also tossed 1.0 inning of shutout relief. Sophomore Matt Hammond worked two innings and did not allow an earned run.
The Black & Gold return Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 for Game 3 of the series. Freshman Garrett Bullock will start for the Black, while Greg Saville will start for the Gold.
