WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Redshirt sophomore Eric Williams went 4-for-4 with a walk and run scored to spearhead the Black past the Gold, 4-3, in game three of the 2005 Black & Gold World Series.
"I am proud of the way our team fought," said Black head coach Marshall Canosa. "We had a little adversity, but we were able to do the little things to come away with a win."
"Eric continues to be the catalyst of our offense," Canosa added. "We could not ask anything more from him."
Williams, a transfer from Arizona State, had three singles and a double. The leadoff hitter is 9-for-10 over the first three games of the series.
Freshman Dustin Hood went 2-for-4, including a two-run single. Sophomore Brett Linnenkohl also went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Sophomore Nathan Frazier was the final Black player with a multi-hit game. Frazier went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Sophomore Eric Niesen picked up the victory in relief. The southpaw tossed 2.1 hitless innings. Niesen struckout one and did not issue a walk. Freshman Garrett Bullock started and pitched 4.2 innings. The lefty allowed just two hits and fanned three, but was hurt by four walks and two errors in the field.
The Gold rallied from the 3-0 deficit following Hood's two-run single and Linnenkohl's RBI double in the first inning. Freshman Tyler Smith belted a solo home run in the fifth inning to knot the score, 3-3.
Linnenkohl led off the seventh inning with a triple of Gold closer Ben Hunter. After Hunter came back striking out Hood and Frazier, senior Casey Sterk singled in Linnekohl.
