WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 15 Wake Forest men's soccer team dominated play for most of the match, but were not able to get anything past Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi as the critical ACC match ended in a scoreless draw, 0-0, Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. The scoreless draw was the first for a Wake Forest team since Sept. 13, 1996 and the first scoreless draw at home since Oct. 15, 1995.
Marfuggi was brilliant throughout the match. The junior finished with a season-high nine saves and posted his second shutout of the season. Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards was equal to every Tiger task as well. The sophomore recorded four saves and posted his sixth shutout of the season and 15th of his career.
The Deacs had a pair of golden scoring chances in the 32nd minute. The duo of senior All-American Justin Moose and junior Wells Thompson worked a beautiful give-and-go just outside the Clemson penalty area. Moose spun and rifled a shot into the lower corner that Marfuggi saved. Thompson chased down the rebound, but his shot on goal was again stopped by Marfuggi. Junior defender Steven Curfman had another great chance just before halftime. Curfman's blast from 20-yards out was stopped after a diving effort from Marfuggi.
The Deacs out-shot Clemson, 8-1, in the opening 45-minutes. Wake Forest wasted no time in the second stanza generating a scoring opportunity. Freshman defender Sam Cronin split a pair of Tiger defenders with a ball into the Clemson penalty area. Moose collected the pass and struck a low shot that seemed to get under Marfuggi, but the goalkeeper managed to corral the ball and keep the match scoreless.
Then, in the 83rd minute, Moose missed on what turned out to be the Demon Deacons best chance of the match. The forward broke free behind the Tiger defense and went one-on-one with Marfuggi. Moose chipped the ball over the charging netminder toward an empty net, but the shot skidded just wide.
Each side had a couple of narrow misses in each overtime session.
The tie not only snaps the Wake Forest two-match winning streak on the season, but also ends the two-match winning streak over Clemson and five-match winning streak at Spry Stadium.
Wake Forest will return to action Sunday afternoon at new ACC foe Boston College. Kickoff with the Eagles is scheduled for 2 p.m.
