Deacons host Tigers
The 12th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team hosts Clemson on Sunday. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons (8-4-1, 3-3 ACC) is coming off a 3-0 loss at No. 6 Duke. The Tigers (6-6-2, 1-4-1 ACC) lost a 1-0 overtime contest to Miami in Clemson, S.C.
Clemson leads the all-time series 2-10-3. The Deacons are 0-4-3 in the last seven meetings between the two schools.
Last season, the Deacs and Tigers played to a 2-2 double overtime tie. Clemson took the lead scoring in the 37th minute. The Deacons responded when Elizabeth Remy scored in the 56th minute. Taylor Toombs recorded an assist on Remy's seventh goal of the season.
Clemson responded by retaking the lead in the 61st minute, but Sarah Kozey tied the match in the 75th minute. Jayme Leigh Cargnoni recorded an assist on the goal.
Wake Forest last defeated Clemson in 1999, when the Deacs edged the Tigers, 2-1.
Last time out
No. 12 Wake Forest traveled to No. 6 Duke and could not stop the Blue Devil attack, falling 3-0. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the match. In the 16th minute, Duke's Kate Seibert had a break away opportunity, but junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe made a diving save on the shot.
Three minutes later Deacon freshman Camelyn Dillon threaded a pass to senior Sarah Kozey. Kozey had to pause momentarily as Duke goalkeeper Allison Lipsher made a play on the ball, and the Blue Devil defense recovered to poke the ball away.
The Blue Devils took the lead in the 20th minute when junior Lauren Tippets knocked in a direct kick. Tippets' shot from 28 yards out hit junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe in the hands, but Doe was unable to hold on as the ball just rolled into the lower left corner of the goal.
In the 67th minute of the match, the Deacons had a scoring opportunity when freshman Amanda Lebo fired a bending shot from the left side of the box to the upper right corner. Lipsher made the save, and the Blue Devils quickly counterattacked. Duke junior Rebecca Moros sent a shot into the lower right corner and Currie could not make the save. Darby Kroyer recorded an assist on the goal.
The Blue Devils scored again in the 84th minute to stretch the lead to 3-0 as Kroyer netted a direct kick from 21 yards.
da Luz reaches the century mark, closes in on 150
With the win against Boston College, Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz recorded his 100th win with the Deacons. da Luz is also closing in on career win number 150. da Luz previously coached at San Diego from 1992-96.
da Luz has a record of 101-6415, as the Deacons' head coach. da Luz has also yet to experience a losing season at the helm of the women's soccer team.
For his career, da Luz has a record of 147-106-19. His 147 wins place him 48th all-time among active NCAA Division I coaches.
Deacons in the rankings
The Wake Forest women's soccer team is ranked in four national polls. The Deacons are ranked 12th in this week's adidas/NSCAA poll. Soccer Buzz Magazine ranks Wake Forest 13th. Soccer Times ranks the Deacs 13th, while Soccer America ranks the team 17th in the latest polls.
By earning a national ranking in 2005, the Deacons have been ranked at least one week every season since 1996.
Cargnoni on the offensive
Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni leads the team in points in conference games. The defender has registered two goals and three assists, for a total of seven points.
For her performance against Boston College, Cargnoni was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on October 5th.
Cargnoni scored the first goal of the match in the 56th minute when she redirected in a shot from Amy Smerdzinski past the Boston College keeper.
After Boston College evened the match in the 82nd minute, Cargnoni beat the BC defense to the endline and sent a crossing pass into the box where junior Lindsey Jaco netted the gamewinner with just 1:20 remaining in the match.
Cargnoni assisted on Kozey's gamewinning goal against NC State. She also recorded her first goal and assist in the shutout win over Virginia Tech.
Remy continues to shine
Deacon forward Elizabeth Remy has continued her stellar season after her blazing start. The junior Norman, Okla., native leads the Demon Deacons with 16 points. Remy has scored four times and assisted on eight other tallies.
Remy played a role in seven of the first nine Deacon goals scored. In recognition of her great start, the ACC named Remy its ACC Player of the Week for August 30.
Remy also earned national honors from Buzz Magazine and Soccer America as both publications named Remy to their weekly teams of the week (Aug. 30).
In the ACC/WCC Challenge, Remy was named the Offensive MVP as well as named to the all-tournament team. She netted her third goal of the season.
Against Washington State, Remy recorded two assists. She set up Melanie Schneider's goal which gave Wake Forest an early 1-0 lead, and later in the game created the scoring opportunity for Sarah Kozey's recordbreaking goal.
Remy added her fourth goal in the win over Virginia Tech.
Prior to this season, Remy had scored 13 goals and registered six assists. Through just 11 games of her junior campaign, the forward already has four goals and eight assists. The eight assists places Remy in a tie for third most in one season. She stands just two behind the single season record held by Anne Shropshire and Stefanie Matthews.
Kozey rewriting the record books
With her gamewinning goal against Washington State, senior Sarah Kozey broke Emily Taggart's career goals scored record with 30. Taggart, who played for the Deacons from 1998-2001, scored 29 career goals. Kozey, a forward from Halifax, Nova Scotia, added yet another goal against the Hokies and the gamewinner over NC State to give her 33 career goals.
Kozey also moved into second place in career points with 82. She passed Taggart (76 points) and trails Anne Shropshire (85 points). Kozey also ranks third on the career shots list with 192.
Spreading the wealth
This season, 11 players have scored 24 goals. Three more Deacons who have not scored a goal have registered assists, including freshman Camelyn Dillon who has three.
Garrick earns Soccer Buzz honors
Defender Keisha Garrick became the second Deacon this season to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week. The publication honored the junior from Toronto for her stellar play against Santa Clara and San Diego. Garrick also was named the Defensive MVP of the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, junior Elizabeth Remy, freshman Camelyn Dillon, and senior Melanie Schneider joined Garrick on the all-tournament team.
Hanley out indefinitely
Deacon midfielder Kristina Hanley is out indefinitely with a collar bone injury. The
sophomore had started the first eight games of the season in the midfield and had recorded a goal and an assist. Last season, Hanley missed the last seven games after tearing an ACL.
Fearless freshmen setting records
In their first career game, the Deacon freshmen stepped up when it mattered most. Trailing 1-0 in the match, midfielder Amanda Lebo netted a goal in the 25th-minute tying the game. Lebo collected a blocked Elizabeth Remy shot and fired a shot past the keeper. In the second half, midfielder Amy Smerdzinski knocked in a shot from 20-yards out into the upper right corner of the goal. In the 83rd-minute, forward Whitney Berry rebounded her own missed shot and rocketed a shot past the Seahawks' goalie. Freshman midfielder Camelyn Dillon recorded an assist on Berry's goal.
The three goals scored marked a Demon Deacon record. Three freshman had never scored a goal in their first career game before this season. The last time three freshman scored a goal in a game came last season when current sophomores Maggie Horne, Kristina Hanley, and Amber Bettenhausen each netted a goal versus Davidson.
So far this season, the freshmen have recorded four goals and six assists.
A tough road
The Demon Deacons once again face one of the toughest schedules in America. Although, playing in the ACC gives the Deacons little choice in playing a difficult slate.
Including the Deacs, six ACC schools earned top-25 rankings. North Carolina (3rd adidas/NSCAA, 3rd Soccer Buzz, 3rd Soccer America, 3rd Soccer Times), Virginia (7th a/N, 5th SB, 5th SA, 6th ST), Boston College (10th a/N, 14th SB, 14th SA, 11th ST), Duke (6th a/N, 8th SB, 8th SA, 8th ST), and Florida State (9th a/N, 6th SB, 9th SA, 9th ST) represent the conference.
The Deacs also played Santa Clara to a 0-0 double overtime tie. The Broncos are ranked in the top-12 in each of the four major polls.
Changing places
Several Deacons have changed positions from last year. Most notably is junior Kaitlyn Doe. Doe moved from her defensive spot in the field into the goalkeeper position.
Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni moved from the midfield to the back and has started every contest as an attacking defender.
Sophomores Ashley Spooner, defender to forward, and Megan Upchurch, forward to defender, also changed positions from 2004.
Wake returns top scorers
Out of the 34 goals scored last year, the Deacs return players that accounted for 33 of the scores. Sarah Kozey (12 goals), Elizabeth Remy (seven goals) and Melanie Schneider (six goals) finished 2004 as the leading scorers. Juniors Jayme Leigh Cargnoni and Kristen Kemp netted two goals last season.
Deacs again picked to finish seventh
Wake Forest was selected to finish seventh in the ACC coaches poll. Last season, the Deacons finished in a tie for fifth with a 4-4-1 conference record. The Deacons' overall record stood at 10-7-2.
Another talented class
Each of the last two seasons, da Luz has brought in record numbers of players in recruiting classes. While this season only six players are new faces, the talent level is very high. Soccer Buzz ranked the Deacons freshmen class 29th nationally.
Amanda Lebo was a top-25 selection, while Amy Smerdzinski was ranked in the top-100 players. The class is rounded out by Erin Baldwin, Whitney Berry, Christy Carter and Camelyn Dillon.
Nine in a row
In 2004, the Demon Deacons earned their ninth straight trip to the NCAA tournament. Facing UAB in the first round, the Deacs fell 2-0.
They come from all around
The Wake Forest women's soccer team has players from all across the nation, representing 12 different states and Canada. North Carolina has five representatives and California has four girls. Three Deacons hail from Texas. Georgia, Colorado, Florida, Virginia and Pennsylvania each have two players. Kansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Michigan each have one player. Two players hail from Canada, one from Nova Scotia and the other from Ontario.
Up next
Wake Forest will travel to the Sunshine State to take on No. 9 Florida State and Miami. The Deacons and Seminoles will kick off on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. The Deacs will then play at Miami on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.
Wake Forest owns a 7-3-2 advantage in the series with Florida State. The Deacons, however, have a three game winless streak against the `Noles. Last year, the Deacs lost in Tallahassee, 1-0, despite outshooting the Seminoles 14-8. The last Deacon win came in 2002 as the Deacons won in double overtime on the road, 3-2.
The Deacs and Hurricanes have met just one time, last season. The Deacons routed the `Canes, 5-0. Jayme Leigh Cargnoni scored just 40 seconds into the match, and the Deacons scored four more times including two goals from Elizabeth Remy, one from Melanie Schneider and one from Kristen Kemp.
