WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 16 Wake Forest men's soccer team got first-half goals from Grey Ballard and Justin Moose in a 2-1 victory over Davidson in men's college soccer action from Spry Stadium Tuesday night. With the victory, the Demon Deacons improve to 7-3-0, while the Wildcats fall to 6-4-0.
Wake Forest, which has beaten Davidson each of the last eight years, grabbed an early lead on Ballard's first goal of the season. Ballard, making his first start of 2005, headed home junior Ryan Solle's corner kick at 14:48. The goal was Ballard's third of his career -- first since the 2002 season.
For Solle, the assist was his 12th of the season and 22nd of his career. The Broadway, N.C. native has registered an assist in eight consecutive matches. Solle is tied with former Demon Deacon and current Kansas City Wizards forward Scott Sealy for fourth on the all-time assist list.
Wake Forest pushed the lead to 2-0 on a tremendous individual effort from Moose at 27:08. After Moose received the ball deep in the Davidson defensive third just outside the penalty area, the forward beat one Wildcat defender to the endline then beat another before hammering a shot into the far corner. The tally was the third of the season and 14th of his career. With 54 career points, Moose ranks eighth all-time in school history.
Despite a two-goal lead and controlling much of the play, the Deacs were not able to put away the Wildcats. Davidson cut the deficit in half with a great goal from sophomore Robby Hoak at 71:26. Hoak snuck a shot off his back heel under Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards for his team-high sixth goal of the season. Cass Baltz and Mac Wilkie combined for the assist.
Wake Forest had a number of chances to put the match away as the Deacs outshot Davidson, 14-5, on the night, but only four of those shots were on goal.
The Demon Deacons return to action Friday night with another non-conference match. Alabama A&M travels to Spry Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
