Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week on Wednesday. The defender from San Diego, Calif., helped the Deacons down previously unbeaten No. 8 Boston College, 2-1, on Sunday.
Cargnoni scored the first goal of the match in the 56th minute when she re-directed in a shot from Amy Smerdzinski past the Boston College keeper.
After Boston College evened the match in the 82nd minute, Cargnoni beat the Eagle defense to the endline and sent a crossing pass into the box where junior Lindsey Jaco netted the gamewinner with just 1:20 remaining in the match.
Cargnoni has two goals and two assists on the year. Her first goal and assist both came in the 4-0 win against Virginia Tech.
Cargnoni joins fellow juniors Keisha Garrick and Elizabeth Remy in earning national honors. Remy earned both Soccer America and Soccer Buzz honors, for the week of Aug. 30, for her two goal and five assist performance against UNC Wilmington and Davidson. Garrick was named to the Soccer Buzz team of the week on Sept. 6 for her defensive MVP performance in the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Garrick and the Deacons shut down the Santa Clara attack in a 0-0 double overtime tie, allowing just two shots on goal in the match. The defense then allowed just one shot against San Diego in a 5-1 rout.
Cargnoni and Wake Forest return to action Thursday as they host NC State at Spry Stadium. The match with the Wolfpack will kick off at 7 p.m. For the latest information on these matches as well as the latest news on Wake Forest Soccer, visit WakeForestSports.com.
