Winston-Salem, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team fought off not only NC State but Mother Nature as well Thursday night, winning the match 1-0.
The two teams kicked off in a downpour that for the first 20 minutes grew heavier with each passing moment in the match. Neither side could gain enough momentum to knock a shot into the net in the opening 45 minutes. Each team took four shots, and Deacon goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe registered two first half saves.
The Deacs took the lead in the 70th minute when senior Sarah Kozey knocked in a bicycle kick from four yards in front of the Wolfpack goal. Junior Elizabeth Remy dribbled the ball up the right side and centered the ball into the box. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni fired the ball towards the goal and Kozey collected the deflection and put the ball in the upper left corner of the net.
The goal marked Kozey's sixth on the year. Remy collected her eighth assist on the season, which moves her into a tie for the third highest single season assist mark. She stands two behind Anne Shropshire (1998) and Stefanie Matthews (1998). Cargnoni's assist is the third in her last four games. Over the four-game stretch, the San Diego native has recorded a total of seven points (two goals, three assists).
The Deacons spent the remaining time in the second half preventing NC State from taking a shot, until a 35-yard attempt with one second left in the match.
Doe made three saves in the match to record her third shutout of the season.
"It's a win on a miserable night," said head coach Tony da Luz. "I thought we controlled the game as far as passing, but we didn't have much hunger around the box to finish. (Sarah) Kozey, as usual, bailed us out with a great goal. We can't score on simple goals, we score on a bicycle kick to make it difficult. It was a spectacular goal for her.
"I thought Amy Smerdzinski stood out and played very, very well in the midfield. I thought Amanda Lebo came in the second have and gave us a big spark. Megan Upchurch was absolutely fantastic the whole game. A win's a win, and we're looking forward to Duke."
Wake Forest will travel to Durham on Wednesday to take on No. 12 Duke. The Deacons and Blue Devils will kick off at 7 p.m. For the latest news and information on Wake Forest soccer, visit WakeForestSports.com.
