Winston-Salem, N.C. - Junior Lauren Crandall scored the only goal for the No. 2 Wake Forest field hockey team as the Demon Deacons defeated Cal, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Saturday afternoon in Kentner Stadium.

The win advances the Demon Deacons to the second round of the tournament where they will face Indiana, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Indiana defeated North Carolina, 3-2, earlier in the day to advance.

Crandall, who scored off a penalty corner in the 42nd minute, led the team with seven shots. Freshman Christine Suggs and senior Maeke Boreel both assisted on the goal and each added two shots.

The Deacs kept the game scoreless through the first stanza, despite Wake Forest earning four penalty corners and taking six shots. It wasn't until Wake earned two consecutive corners early in the second half that Crandall was able to connect with a powerful shot that went right past Veronica Sykes, the Cal goalkeeper.

Wake Forest controlled the pace of the entire game, keeping the ball in Cal's territory. Not allowing the Bears any shots, junior goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi recorded her seventh shutout of the season and the 16th of her career. For Cal, Sykes made 10 saves, including seven in the second half.

The win improves the Demon Deacons to 20-1 overall and advances them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year.
