Wake Forest Volleyball Falls To Duke, 3-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team cruised past Duke in the first game, 30-13, but the Blue Devils fought back and won the next three to defeat the Demon Deacons, 3-1 (30-13, 30-24, 30-23, 30-25), Tuesday night in Reynolds Gym.
Wake Forest had four players hit in double digits, including Jessica Furlong with 16 kills. Furlong was also one of five players with double figure digs with 17. Senior Erin Borhart also earned a double-double with 45 assists and 17 digs.
In game one, the Demon Deacons dominated, setting the pace with an early 9-3 lead that caused a Blue Devil time out. Continuing to pressure Duke, Wake Forest closed the match with a 21-10 run. Wake Forest, who hit .371 in the opening frame, held Duke to a .000 hitting percentage to win game one, 30-13.
The Blue Devils took their first lead of the match in game two, grabbing a 10-9 advantage after the Deacs opened with an 8-5 lead. Left to catch up the Deacs finally did, knotting the score at 24 all. Once again taking the lead, the Blue Devils closed the second frame with five consecutive points.
Leading 16-14 in game three, Duke went on a 9-5 run to force a Wake Forest time out. Scoring five of the next nine points, the Blue Devils took the game, 30-24.
The Deacs led for the majority of the fourth game, but the Blue Devils were able to catch up and tie the score at 22 all and then again at 23 all. Taking the lead, Duke closed out the match with an 8-2 run for the 30-25 win.
At the net, freshman Natalie Mullikin recorded four block assists and one solo stuff, while Shannan Homan had three. Like Borhart, Natasha Schaefer and Klarysa Henry both added 17 digs, while Jenna Doane added 11.
The Demon Deacons, who have won eight of their last 10 matches, will close the home season on Friday against Virginia and on Saturday against Virginia Tech. Game time against the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m., while the game against the Hokies is at 6 p.m.
