For Starters... Wake Forest started in a two tight end, no fullback set. Milestone starts: Ryan Plackemeier started his team-high 40th straight career game, Matt Robinson started his 20th straight game. Alphonso Smith and Steve Justice started their 10th straight games.
Chris Barclay Record Watch... Chris Barclay rushed 15 times for 24 yards. ... by rushing for more than two yards today, he reached 1,000 yards for the season. He becomes only the 6th player in ACC history to rush for 1,000 yards in three straight seasons. He joins Mike Voight, Ted Brown, Amos Lawrence, Kelvin Bryant and most recently, Warrick Dunn. ... by accumulating more than 47 all-purpose yards today, he became Wake Forest's career leader in all-purpose yards, passing James McDougald (1976-79) who had 4,272 in his career.
Plackemeier Update... Senior punter and Ray Guy Award Semifinalist Ryan Plackemeier continues to boot his way into the recordbooks. Plackemeier broke the ACC record for average yards per punt in a game, a mark previously held by Dick Lackey of North Carolina. In 1953 against South Carolina, Lackey punted four times for 219 yards, good for an average of 54.75 yards per punt. Against the Yellow Jackets, Plackemeier punted five times for 282 yards, good for an average of 56.4 yards per punt.
Three of Plackemeier's punts went for 60+ yards, giving him 12 punts of 60 or more yards on the season and 20 in his career. Plackemeier recorded punts of 55, 45, 55, 64 and 63 yards.
Plackemeier raised his season average from 46.6 yards per punt to 47.4 yards per punt (62 punts for 2,936 yards).
Morton's Touchdown Run... Nate Morton's 24-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was his second of the season. It was the fourth touchdown run by a Deacon wide receiver this season.
Belton's Touchdown Catch... Richard Belton's two-yard touchdown catch was his second receiving touchdown of the season and his third overall. On the play before the score, Belton picked up a fourth down.
Opponent Field Goals... Travis Bell's 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was the second-longest by a Deacon opponent this year. Wake Forest opponents are 14-of-14 on field goal attempts this year.
Swank Streaks Into Record Book... Sam Swank's 23-yard field goal in the second quarter was his 10th consecutive field goal attempt this season. The 10 consecutive makes ties a Wake Forest record set by Wilson Hoyle in 1987. For the season, Swank is 18-for-22 on field goal attempts.
Georgia Tech Scores First... Georgia Tech scored a touchdown on its opening drive. It marked the first time since October 8 against Florida State -- a span of four games -- that Wake Forest failed to score the game's first points and that the Deacons have allowed points on the first opponent's drive.
Trailing At The Break... Wake Forest trailed 17-3 at halftime. It was the first time Wake Forest had trailed at halftime since the Florida State game on October 8.
First Half Struggles... Wake Forest was held to just three points in the first half, tying for its worst output for the season (Maryland and Nebraska). The Deacons were held to just six first downs and 26 rushing yards on 18 attempts.
Long Drive... Wake Forest's 17-play scoring drive in the second quarter tied for the longest this season. Against Clemson, the Deacons had a 17-play drive in the fourth quarter that resulted in a field goal.
Randolph Throws Rare Interception... Cory Randolph threw just his second interception this season during the second quarter. It was Randolph's first pick since the Clemson game on October 1st, a span of 78 pass attempts without an interception. The pick marked only the team's fourth turnover in the last 18 quarters.
Turnover Trouble... The sack of Cory Randolph and consequent fumble was the second turnover for the Deacons. Wake Forest had not committed two turnovers in a game since the Clemson game on October 1.
Daniels' 51-Yard Run... P.J. Daniels' 51-yard run in the third quarter was the longest by a Deacon opponent this season.
2005 Deacon Trends... Wake Forest is now ... 1-4 on the road ... 3-4 in ACC games ... 0-1 in the month of November ... 3-4 in afternoon games ... 0-4 when the opponent scores first ... 0-5 when trailing at the half ... 1-5 when trailing after three quarters ... 0-3 when scoring 0-19 points ... 0-5 when allowing more than 30 points ... 1-2 when outrushed ... 4-5 when throwing for fewer yards ... 1-3 when losing the time of possession battle ... and 1-2 when losing the turnover battle.
Deacon Rushing Lows... With just 100 yards rushing, the Deacons set the third-lowest mark for rushing output. Only against Purdue in 2003 (56 yards) and NC State in 2005 (85 yards) had the Deacons run for fewer yards.
