Deacons earn 10th consecutive NCAA bid
The Wake Forest women's soccer team earned its 10th consecutive bid to the NCAA Championship and will face No. 13 Tennessee in the first round of the Women's College Cup on Friday, Nov. 11, in Charlottesville, Va. The Demon Deacons earned an at-large bid after finishing the season with a 9-8-1 record. The Volunteers reached the field of 64 by winning the SEC Championship and finished the season with a record of 14-5-2.
The Demon Deacons have an all-time record of 4-8-1 in the NCAA Tournament. Wake Forest has only played in a Charlottesville regional once before, in 2001, and lost to William & Mary in double overtime, 2-1.
The Vols have won the only two meetings between the two teams. In 2001, the Deacs travelled to Knoxville and lost 2-1. The next year, the Volunteers downed the Deacons 2-0 in Winston-Salem.
The NCAA berth also marks the 10th consecutive for head coach Tony da Luz as well. da Luz, in his ninth year with the Deacons, also reached the NCAA Tournament in 1996, his final year with San Diego.
Wake Forest and Tennessee did not meet in 2005, but did play common opponents in Washington State and Virginia. The Deacons downed the Cougars in Pullman, Wash., 2-1, while the Vols fell in overtime 3-2. Against the Cavaliers, the Vols recorded a 1-0 upset and the Deacons dropped a pair of one-goal losses, 1-0 at home and 2-1 in the ACC Championship quarterfinals. The winner of the match will face the winner of the Virginia-Liberty match on Sunday.
Wake Forest's current streak of 10 consecutive appearances is tied for the 13th longest in the country. UConn and North Carolina are tied with 24 appearances in 24 chances. Virginia has 18 straight appearances, Santa Clara has 16, Notre Dame and Wisconsin have 14. California and Portland have reached the past 13 NCAA Tournaments. Duke and Clemson have reached the tournament 12 times. Penn State and Texas A&M each have 11 straight appearances. Joining Wake Forest at 10 straight showings are Nebraska and UCLA.
Last time out
The Wake Forest women's soccer team lost to No. 8 Virginia, 2-1, on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. With the loss, the seventh-seeded Deacons fall to 9-8-1 and the second-seeded Cavaliers improve to 14-4-1.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead at the 13:39 mark of the match when Jen Redmond fired a shot from 10 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal past a diving Kaitlyn Doe. Redmond's third goal of the season was set up by Sarah Huffman and Shannon Foley.
In the 33rd minute, Redmond broke through the defense and had an apparent one-on-one opportunity against Doe, but senior All-ACC midfielder Melanie Schneider poked the ball away from behind to prevent a shot on goal.
In the 53rd minute, Wake Forest had just its second shot of the match when sophomore Nichole Lecznar took a header shot off a Kristen Kemp corner kick. The shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Virginia took a 2-0 lead at the 55:20 mark when Redmond served a ball through the defense and found Huffman for her a shot from 12 yards out.
The Demon Deacons answered just 21 seconds later when junior forward Elizabeth Remy netted her seventh goal of the season. Kemp served a ball into the box where junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni hit a one-time chest pass to Remy who fired a shot from 10 yards out.
Kozey, Schneider named All-ACC
Wake Forest women's soccer players Sarah Kozey and Melanie Schneider were each named to the second team All-ACC squads in a vote by the league's coaches.
Kozey, a forward from Halifax, Nova Scotia, earned second team honors for the second consecutive year. The senior scored a team-high seven goals and recorded two assists during the regular season. Kozey also broke the Wake Forest career goals record just five games into the season.
Schneider, a midfielder from Peachtree City, Ga., was named All-ACC for the first time in her career. The senior scored three goals and registered four assists in the regular season.
da Luz reaches the century mark at WFU, closes in on career 150
With the win against Boston College, Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz recorded his 100th win with the Deacons. da Luz is also closing in on career win number 150. da Luz previously coached at San Diego from 1992-96.
da Luz has a record of 102-67-15, as the Deacons' head coach. da Luz has also yet to experience a losing season at the helm of the women's soccer team.
For his career, da Luz has a record of 148-110-19. His 148 wins place him 48th all-time among active NCAA Division I coaches.
Cargnoni on the offensive
Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni tied for the team lead in points in conference games with fellow junior Elizabeth Remy. The defender registered two goals and five assists, for a total of nine points in conference action. She added an assist in the ACC Tournament game against Virginia for 10 points on the season.
For her performance against Boston College, Cargnoni was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on October 5th. Cargnoni scored the first goal of the match in the 56th minute when she redirected in a shot from Amy Smerdzinski past the Boston College keeper.
After Boston College evened the match in the 82nd minute, Cargnoni beat the BC defense to the endline and sent a crossing pass into the box where junior Lindsey Jaco netted the gamewinner with just 1:20 remaining in the match.
Cargnoni assisted on Kozey's gamewinning goal against NC State. She also recorded her first goal and assist in the shutout win over Virginia Tech.
Remy continues to shine
Deacon forward Elizabeth Remy has continued her stellar season after her blazing start. The junior Norman, Okla., native leads the Demon Deacons with 24 points. Remy has scored seven times and assisted on 10 other tallies.
Remy played a role in seven of the first nine Deacon goals scored. In recognition of her great start, the ACC named Remy its ACC Player of the Week for August 30.
Remy also earned national honors from Buzz Magazine and Soccer America as both publications named Remy to their weekly teams of the week (Aug. 30).
In the ACC/WCC Challenge, Remy was named the Offensive MVP as well as named to the all-tournament team. She netted her third goal of the season.
Against Washington State, Remy recorded two assists. She set up Melanie Schneider's goal which gave Wake Forest an early 1-0 lead, and later in the game created the scoring opportunity for Sarah Kozey's recordbreaking goal.
Remy added her fourth goal in the win over Virginia Tech. She recorded a goal and an assist in the loss to Clemson. Remy's sixth goal came in the 2-0 win over Miami.
Prior to this season, Remy had scored 13 goals and registered six assists. Through just 15 games of her junior campaign, the forward already has five goals and 10 assists. The 10 assists places Remy in a tie for the most in one season. She shares the single season record held by Anne Shropshire and Stefanie Matthews.
Hanley returns to action
Deacon midfielder Kristina Hanley saw her first action at the ACC Championship quarterfinal since fracturing her clavicle the day before the Virginia Tech match.
The sophomore had started the first eight games of the season in the midfield and had recorded a goal and an assist. Last season, Hanley missed the last seven games after tearing an ACL. Hanley missed nine games this season due to the injury.
Kozey rewriting the record books
With her gamewinning goal against Washington State, senior Sarah Kozey broke Emily Taggart's career goals scored record with 30. Taggart, who played for the Deacons from 1998-2001, scored 29 career goals. Kozey, a forward from Halifax, Nova Scotia, added yet another goal against the Hokies and the gamewinner over NC State to give her 33 career goals. Kozey added her 34th career tally against Clemson.
Kozey also moved into second place in career points with 84. She passed Taggart (76 points) and trails Anne Shropshire (85 points). Kozey also ranks second on the career shots list with 204.
Spreading the wealth
This season, 11 players have scored 24 goals. Three more Deacons who have not scored a goal have registered assists, including freshman Camelyn Dillon who has three.
Garrick earns Soccer Buzz honors
Defender Keisha Garrick became the second Deacon this season to be named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine Elite Team of the Week. The publication honored the junior from Toronto for her stellar play against Santa Clara and San Diego. Garrick also was named the Defensive MVP of the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, junior Elizabeth Remy, freshman Camelyn Dillon, and senior Melanie Schneider joined Garrick on the all-tournament team.
Fearless freshmen setting records
In their first career game, the Deacon freshmen stepped up when it mattered most. Trailing 1-0 in the match, midfielder Amanda Lebo netted a goal in the 25th-minute tying the game. Lebo collected a blocked Elizabeth Remy shot and fired a shot past the keeper. In the second half, midfielder Amy Smerdzinski knocked in a shot from 20-yards out into the upper right corner of the goal. In the 83rd-minute, forward Whitney Berry rebounded her own missed shot and rocketed a shot past the Seahawks' goalie. Freshman midfielder Camelyn Dillon recorded an assist on Berry's goal.
The three goals scored marked a Demon Deacon record. Three freshman had never scored a goal in their first career game before this season. The last time three freshman scored a goal in a game came last season when current sophomores Maggie Horne, Kristina Hanley, and Amber Bettenhausen each netted a goal versus Davidson.
So far this season, the freshmen have recorded four goals and seven assists.
Berry out for season
Freshman Whitney Berry is out for the remainder of the season following an ACL and MCL tear in her knee. The forward injured her knee late in the loss to North Carolina and has been sidelined since.
Changing places
Several Deacons have changed positions from last year. Most notably is junior Kaitlyn Doe. Doe moved from her defensive spot in the field into the goalkeeper position.
Junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni moved from the midfield to the back and has started every contest as an attacking defender.
Sophomores Ashley Spooner, defender to forward, and Megan Upchurch, forward to defender, also changed positions from 2004.
