
Wake Forest Women's Basketball Cruises Past Coppin State, 80-51

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Liz Strunk scored the game-high 21 points and three others put up double figures as the Wake Forest women's basketball team flew past Coppin State, 80-51, Saturday evening in Joel Coliseum. The win snaps a one game losing streak and improves the Demon Deacons overall record to 4-3.
Senior Cotelia Bond-Young followed Strunk closely with 20 points, while freshman Deirdre Naughton continued her streak of scoring in double figures with 10 points. Naughton also led the team with six rebounds, five steals and five assists. Sophomore Tara Tate rounded out the Deacs in double digits with 13 points off 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early 16-5 lead that included a stretch of nine unanswered points and a pair of three's from Bond-Young. Continuing to push ahead, the Deacs increased their lead to 15 in the remaining minutes. Scoring 14 of her 20 total points, Bond-Young shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to lead Wake Forest into the break with the 39-26 lead.
In the second half, the Deacs continued to pressure the Eagles from the beginning, with Bond-Young sinking another three in the opening seconds. In the next 10 minutes, Wake led Coppin State on a 15-5 run that gave the Deacs a lead that the Eagles were unable to touch. As the game ran down, Wake Forest pushed its lead to as much as 33 and took the game, 80-51.
The Demon Deacons scored a total of 36 points off the Eagles 28 turnovers and earned 15 steals, while off the boards, Coppin State had the advantage, 39 to 31. Two Lady Eagles scored in double figures, including Shalamar Oakley with 17 and Sherrie Tucker with 15.
Wake Forest will close its three game homestand with on Monday, Dec. 19 with an 11:00 a.m. game against Lipscomb University.
