Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team hopes to crack a five game losing streak Wednesday night as they host #5/8 North Carolina in Joel Coliseum at 7 p.m. The meeting between the two teams is the second this season with the Tar Heels taking the victory, 83-61 in Chapel Hill.
In the last outing for the Demon Deacons, Wake dropped a tough one against Florida State and now carry a 13-10 overall record and 2-8 mark in the conference. Recovering from a one point deficit at the half, the Deacs were able to get ahead by as much as 14, but a number of turnovers hurt the team and the Seminoles took control and tied the score at 69 all with 26 seconds remaining. A last second jumper from outside the free throw line put Noles ahead and the Deacs fell by two.
Before the first game against North Carolina earlier this season, Wake Forest was currently on a one game series winning streak after defeating the then-#10/11 Tar Heels, 69-67, at the Joel Coliseum last year (Jan. 26, 2004). The victory for the Deacs was the fourth time in the last five years the Wake has taken the win over the Heels at the Joel. Overall, the series stands at 52-12, while in Winston-Salem, the Tar Heels also lead 18-8. At Joel Coliseum, the series stands with UNC ahead, 5-9.
The Tar Heels will enter the game tonight with an impressive 20-3 overall record and an 8-2 ACC mark that most recently includes a 93-67 victory over Virginia Tech. Not having a week yet this season out of the top-25, North Carolina has been ranked as high as #2 in the Associated Press poll and as high as #4 in the USAToday rankings. Led in the last two games by sophomore Ivory Latta, the Heels will also Erlana Larkins will also be a threat on the hardwood. In the last outing against the Deacs, Larkins led the team with 18 points and 11 boards, while Latta added 16 and seven from the glass.
