WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Yolanda Lavender and Diedre Naughton, both Wake Forest women's basketball signees, have been selected honorable mention All-Americans by the 2005 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), as announced today by the organization.
Lavender, a 5-foot-8, three-time Street & Smith All-America honorable mention pointguard from Capital Heights, Md., averaged 16 points per game and was selected by the Blue Star Report as the #31 recruit in the country. Participating at the Nike All-America Camp in 2004, Lavender was also selected to the USA Youth Development Festival East Team, which brings together 48 of the nation's top women's high school basketball seniors. She was also a Washington Post All-Met selection from 2002-04.
Dierdre Naughton, a 5-foot-10 native of Wilmette, Ill., was a Nike All-American camp selection in 2004 and she has been ranked as the #38 recruit in the country by the Blue Start Report. A Street & Smith All America Honorable Mention in 2004, Naughton averaged 21 points, four rebounds and four steals per game for New Trier High School. She is a two-time Chicago Tribune All-State second team selection, a Chicago Sun-Times All-Area selection in 2003 and a 2004 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association first team All-State selection.
The team and honorable mentions are a compilation of the nation's top girls basketball players and the players that have been chosen to play will be divided into two teams with 10 players each. This marks the 14th year that the WBCA has sanctioned a girls' high school All-America Team.
"The WBCA High School All-America Game Selection Committee has done a fantastic job assembling a great crop of talent," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "As always, basketball fans will have the privilege of watching twenty of the best high school players in the country. The WBCA is once again proud to be hosting the High School All-America Game along with Nike, continuing the rich tradition of showcasing the future of women's basketball."
The 2005 class of WBCA All-Americans joins the likes of past participants such as Tamika Catchings, Chamique Holdsclaw, Katie Smith, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Alana Beard.
