Winston-Salem, N.C. - The women's basketball team goes on the road once again for the final game of the regular season, Sunday afternoon against the University of Virginia. The Demon Deacons, who will travel to the ACC tournament after this game, are coming off close match-up against NC State on Thursday night.
Against the visting Wolfpack, Wake brought the game down to the final minutes, but the NC State was able to hit a series of free throws that pushed them over the edge and gave them the game, 64-61. With the loss, Wake falls to 14-12 overall and 3-10 in the ACC. Against the Pack, junior Liz Strunk had another strong outing, putting up the game high 24 points, 22 of which came in the second half. In the last two games, Strunk has scored a total of 64 points.
The game against Virginia may be the first trip to Charlottesville this season, but the two teams met earlier this year, in the second ACC game of the season. That night, redshirt-sophomore Porsche' Jones hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining in regulation that pushed the game into overtime, but the Cavaliers battled it out in the extra stanza and took the game, 85-83. The overtime loss was the third overtime game of the season (and most recent) for the Deacs, which dropped them to 1-2 when forced into an extra period.
In the series with Virginia, the meeting with the Cavaliers on Sunday will be the 58th overall, with the Demon Deacons trailing in the series 2-55. The most recent victory for Wake Forest was a 77-66 victory on Jan. 5, 2003, marking the first time in 49 meetings that the Deacs emerged victorious. Since that game during the 2002-03 season, the two teams have met four times, with Virginia sweeping all the games. In Charlottesville, the Deacs have struggled, with the Cavaliers winning the past 23 games.
Virginia enters the game on Sunday afternoon with a 18-9 overall record and an 7-6 mark in the conference, which puts them in the fifth place in the ACC. In the last outing for UVa., the Cavaliers fell to #8/4 North Carolina, 80-69 in Chapel Hill. Against the Tar Heels, Brandi Teamer put up 11 points, while Siedah Williams and Kate Kreager each had six rebounds.
