Practice No. 9/Scrimmage No. 1:
On Saturday morning, and for the first time this fall, the Wake Forest football team scrimmaged at Groves Stadium. The offense, with nine returning starters, had the upper hand, putting together a number of sustained drives. One of the touchdowns came on a short pass completion from sophomore Benjamin Mauk to redshirt freshman fullback Richard Belton.
Later, redshirt freshman quarterback Allan Holland hooked up with redshirt freshman Demir Boldin after a play fake for a huge gain. On the next play, Holland hit senior Cory Randolph on a slant for a short touchdown. Randolph saw action at both receiver and quarterback in the morning. He made a couple of catches and moved the offense behind the first team offensive line while at quarterback.
One of the best highlights of the morning scrimmage was a long bomb up the right sideline from true freshman quarterback Brett Hodges to Chip Brinkman who made a sensational catch, despite tight coverage, for a score.
Redshirt freshman Sam Swank appears to be well on his way to locking up the placekicker's job. After the offense stalled near the 35-yard line, Swank trotted out for a 52-yard attempt. Holder Ryan Plackemeier pulled down a high snap and got it down for Swank who was unfazed as his kick was good with plenty of distance.
The other special teams highlight of the day was when redshirt freshman Chip Vaughn broke through the punt protection and smothered Ryan Plackemeier's attempt.
Defensively, senior Goryal Scales was impressive with a sack and two tackles for loss. Junior Bryan Andrews sacked the quarterback and cornerbacks Alphonso Smith and Johnny Edwards each broke up passes that appeared to be sure completions.
On The Sideline:
A number of players sat out the scrimmage due to minor injuries. Jon Abbate, John Finklea, L.J. Flintall, Michael Lockett, Delon Lowe, Kevin Marion, Matt Robinson and Michael Simmons were among those who did not play. Chris Barclay and Riley Swanson will be eligible for full pads on Monday.
