Former Deacon Barry Fabyan Wins Cardinal Amateur

He followed that with a near record-breaking round of 63 on Saturday and brought home the trophy with a mere 71 on Sunday.
Not bad for a guy who had completely stopped playing the game four years ago.
"They inspired me to regain my amateur status," said Fabyan, the 1987 Cardinal Am champ who turned pro after college. "I hadn't played in seven years. I received an invitation to the 25th anniversary dinner. So I FedExed my application to the U.S. Golf Association in order to come back and play in this tournament. It was the right time and the right place."
After finishing in the top 20 the previous three years, Fabyan said he almost didn't play this year because of his lack of competition. He said the only other tournament he had played in was a scramble in March with the company he works for in
"I didn't know if I should come up to this event," Fabyan said.
Fabyan said the key to his victory was the 7-under 63 he posted Saturday -- one shot off the tournament record. The main reason he was able to shoot that low was his putting, something he said was more mental than anything.
"I had been working to visualize good things happening," Fabyan said. "I stopped trying so hard to make them and just started seeing them going in the hole."
After taking the lead going into the final round, Fabyan said his plan was to be cautiously aggressive. If he saw an opportunity to go for a shot he would, but otherwise he would play it safe.
It paid off.
"I didn't have my best game today so I just didn't want to force anything," Fabyan said. "I was just focused on making par. I was very intent on making the field beat me. When I didn't see a good opportunity, I would play it safe."
While Fabyan shot par over the last four holes, runner-up Ryan Blaum, bogeyed two holes to drop two shots back and finish as the runner-up for the third year in a row.
"I didn't play well at all this year," said Blaum. "My goal was to finish at 10-under, but I made a couple of bad bogeys. I missed a 4-footer on No. 9 for a birdie and I got real frustrated. The heat has caused the greens to be thinned out and made them kind of bumpy."
Blaum, the ACC player of the year from Duke, said he was using the Cardinal Amateur as a tune up for the U.S. Amateur to be played at the Merion Golf Club in
"They have similar distances," Blaum said of the two courses. "They put a premium on putting the ball in the fairway."
One of the best finishes by a local player was Drew Younts, a senior at
"I had a little bit of advantage because this is where we (
It was the 28th year for the Cardinal Amateur, which not only promotes the game of golf but raises money for the Thomas G. O'Briant Scholarship, which provides for four years of college for a student from the Guilford County School System.
