Columbus, Ohio - The Wake Forest women's soccer team won its exhibition opener at Ohio State Monday night by a score of 3-1.
The two squads played a 45 minute opening period, a 25 minute second period and a 20 minute third period.
The Demon Deacons took the early lead as senior forward Sarah Kozey squeezed a shot past a diving keeper and netted a goal in the lower right hand corner. Kozey's goal came courtesy of a header pass from senior midfielder Melanie Schneider 18:57 into the match.
The Deacons struck again with 16:12 remaining in the game as junior forward Elizabeth Remy netted a penalty kick. The Buckeye's keeper Shannon Neely dove to her left, but was unable to reach Remy's shot.
Junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe recorded two saves in the opening period.
In the second period, the Deacs added another goal to take a 3-0 lead when junior midfielder Kristen Kemp headed in a goal over the keeper's head in the 49th minute of the match. Sophomore defender Ashley Burney recorded an assist on the goal after throwing in the ball from the right sideline into the box.
Ohio State tallied the final period's only goal when Caitlin Colfer netted a shot in the top left hand corner with two minutes left in the match. Sophomore goalie Heather Currie could not reach the ball, but recorded two saves in the final two stanzas preserving the victory. Every player who was available to play saw action in the match. Ruth Ann Supica (illness), Amber Bettenhausen (knee), and Christy Carter (hip) did not participate.
"It was a good showing," da Luz said. "We got to rotate everybody into the game. The starting team did a very good job setting the tempo. As we subbed,we maintained a pretty good level. It was a good win for team chemistry, team morale, and everything else.
"We still have a lot of work to do. We are going to hit it hard this week physically and conditioning wise. We're going to keep doing the same things that we're doing and get them ready for the season."
The Deacs outshot the Buckeyes by a 16-10 total, including an eight to five advantage of shots on goal.
Wake Forest will host the Texas Longhorns in the final exhibition Friday night at 6:30 pm at Spry Stadium on the Wake Forest campus. The Deacons will then host UNC Wilmington on Friday, August 28 at 7:00 pm in the season opener.
