Davidson, N.C. - The 21st-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team downed Davidson Sunday night, 5-1, in Davidson, N.C. The Demon Deacons (2-0-0) scored three first half goals to seize control of the match.
The Deacons and Wildcats (1-1-0) played a scoreless first 20 minutes, but in the 23rd-minute, midfielder Melanie Schneider netted a shot from six-yards out off goalkeeper Bevin English's hands. Junior forward Elizabeth Remy set up the goal by dribbling into the box from the right side and threaded a pass to the senior.
Less than two minutes later, the Deacons struck again as Remy fired a goal from 10-yards out. Junior defender Keisha Garrick served a ball to a streaking Ashley Spooner down the left side of the field. Spooner broke free from the Wildcat defender and spotted Remy in the middle of the box. Remy's second goal of the season gave the Deacons a 2-0 lead.
Wake Forest stretched the lead to three goals in the 34th-minute when sophomore midfielder Maggie Horne headed in a ball. Freshman Amanda Lebo fed a pass from the top of the box to the right side where Remy sent a crossing pass straight to Horne. Horne's header from the left side of the box marked her first on the season.
In the second half, senior forward Sarah Kozey netted her first goal of the season and her 28th of her career in the match's 61st-minute. Kozey fed the ball from the top of the box to Remy on the left side. Remy dribbled into the box and found Kozey who scored from 11-yards out.
With 19:13 remaining in the match, Deacon junior Lindsey Jaco headed in a goal to give the Deacons a 5-0 lead. Freshman midfielder Camelyn Dillon served a ball into the box and Jaco netted the header.
With just under five minutes left in the match, Davidson scored its only goal of the game. Senior Cady Blackey netted a shot past a diving Kaitlyn Doe.
"I thought we got off to a slow start, which wasn't great, but once we got the ball moving and playing good combination soccer, the kids really started clicking," said head coach Tony da Luz. "I thought we scored some really classy goals tonight, and everybody played hard. I thought (Elizabeth) Remy was exceptional today and had a lot of zip. Camelyn Dillon did a lot of work for us. It was a good outing."
The next Demon Deacon match will be Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against fifth-ranked Santa Clara at Spry Stadium in the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. Virginia Tech and San Diego will play at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the Deacons will play San Diego at 1:00 p.m., while Virginia Tech and Santa Clara play at 11:30 a.m.
