This is the first installment of WakeForestSports.com's women's soccer diary from seniors Sarah Kozey and Melanie Schneider. Be sure to check back throughout the season to keep up with the latest news from Sarah and Mel.
Somewhere between Ohio and North Carolina - probably West Virginia
This is Sarah and Mel writing from the longest bus trip back from Ohio ever. We are the lone seniors on the women's soccer team. A little background and fun facts about us: Sarah is from an ice fishing village in Nova Scotia and refers to herself in third person on the field. Melanie is from Peachtree City, Ga. where the residents pick peaches and drive golf carts everywhere.
We are super pumped because we just came off a huge preseason win against a highly-ranked Ohio State team. We came out fired up and stunned the Buckeyes. Hard tackles, communication, and a fierce team defense set the tone of the game early and led the Deacs to a 3-1 victory. Even though it's early, it really showed what we are capable of and that what we have done in preseason so far has paid off.
The week preceding the game we spent three days in Winston-Salem testing our fitness and practicing twice a day. Our only complaint is that we did not run early enough in the day and frankly it is just too cold for the month of August. :-)
On the Saturday, we left for the Eagle Creek Farm just outside Columbus, Ohio. Eagle Creek is a team building farm owned by our assistant coach, Meghan Suddes', family.
We spent our time on high ropes courses, scaling 14-foot walls, rock climbing, zip lining, bonding, eating home cooked meals, and sleeping in one room with a couch for us old folks, army cots, and a tent indoors for the weird ones. (Be sure to check out the photo gallery from the weekend!) We want to thank the Suddes family for their hospitality and shout out to Tripp for joining us for our early morning hill sprints - that's dedication!
We are excited to get back to Wake and start preparing for our next scrimmage against Texas on Friday. We hope that ya'll (from the Canadian) are as excited about the season as we are and hope to see a good crowd out at Spry Stadium.
