Defense excels against first team offense... Twice when first team offense matched up against the first team defense, the defense forced the offense into field goals. With Sam Swank not dressed due to illness, senior Ryan Plackemeier took over the place kicking duties.
On one play, Dominic Anderson had a pass hit his hands, but was unable to corral the would-be interception. Another standout play came courtesy of redshirt freshman cornerback Alphonso Smith. As quarterback Cory Randolph rolled to his right, he spotted an open Kenneth Moore. As soon as Randolph fired a pass, Smith made a diving play on the ball to create the breakup.
The defense also stepped up in the overtime drills. Twice the offense gained first downs, but the defense stood strong and forced Plackemeier field goals.
Injury report: Willie Idlette (shoulder), Zac Selmon (ankle), and Swank (illness) did not participate in practice today. Others nursing minor injuries did participate in the afternoon's practice.
Quoting coach Grobe:
On today's practice: "It went okay. We had a day off yesterday. My experience has shown that after a day off everybody's a little bit sluggish and pouting about having to come back to work, but it was a good day. I thought we had some flashes where we were really, really good, and we had times when I thought we were sluggish."
On tomorrow's practice and two-a-days: "We're going to have a good day in the weight room. We're going to have a great lift. One of the problems we've had with two-a-days is that we don't get to look at enough film and critique what we've done. I think sometimes with that second practice, you almost try and get through it. We're going to try and get a little more out of our film and do a better job of being teachers. We've been working hard but probably not teaching as well as we're capable of. We're going to have one good real good practice."
