CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore forward Alimer Gonzalez scored the game's only goal to lead the 19th ranked Demon Deacons men's soccer team past Charlotte, 1-0, in exhibition action Monday night.
"I was proud of the boys' effort tonight," said head coach Jay Vidovich. "We still have a long way to go, but we performed pretty well considering it was our first test against another team."
After the two teams went into the halftime lockeroom scoreless, the Demon Deacons came out and played far more attacking soccer in the second half. Charlotte starting goalkeeper Josh Beachem recorded several acrobatic saves amongst his five in 63 minutes of action.
Gonzalez capitalized on a beautiful ball dropped in behind the 49ers defense by freshman Jamie Franks. Gonzalez chased down the ball and placed an arching shot over the outstretched arms of Charlotte substitute goalkeeper Daniel Burk into the far corner. Andrew Wright teamed up with Franks for the assist.
The Deacs suited up 29 players for the match and all 29 played. Only Steven Curfman and Mark Ellington, both out with injuries, did not see action.
Wake Forest's final tune up for the 2005 season will be on Aug. 27 at Furman. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
