The 16th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will take part in the Carolina Nike Classic for the third straight season. The Demon Deacons will open with South Carolina at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, followed by a Sunday afternoon affair with Rutgers at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at Fetzer Field.
In 2004, the Deacons captured the tournament title with victories over VCU, 1-0, and FIU, 3-2, both in overtime. The previous season, Wake Forest tied St. Louis, 1-1, before blanking Akron, 2-0.
Demon Deacons Open ACC Schedule On The Road At 10th-ranked Duke... after steamrolling both South Carolina and Rutgers at the Carolina Nike Classic last weekend, the 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will travel to Durham this Sunday evening for its ACC opener with Duke. Kickoff with the Blue Devils is slated for 7 p.m. Wake Forest will look to avenge last season's 3-2 loss in Durham. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series with the Demon Deacons, 18-10-5. Prior to last season's loss, Wake Forest had captured four of the last five meetings.
Scouting the Blue Devils... Duke, NCAA College Cup participants a year ago, enters its ACC opener with Wake Forest sporting a 3-1 overall record. The Blue Devils won their first three matches of the season, but then lost to St. John's, 4-1, last Sunday. Duke, preseason favorite in the ACC and ranked as high as #2 in many national polls, is led by a slew of offensive talent. Sophomore midfielder Michael Videira, Soccer America and ACC Freshman of the Year, was included on just about every preseason All-America team. Videira scored four goals and registered 15 assists in his rookie season. So far in 2005, he has a pair of goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Chris Loftus leads the Blue Devils in scoring to this point of the young season. Loftus has three goals and one assist for seven points. Two underclassmen, freshman Mike Grella and sophomore Spencer Wadsworth, are tied for second on the team in points with six a piece (each have two goals and two assists). While Duke can attack as well as any team in the country, they have been susceptible in the back over the past two games. The Blue Devils allowed just one goal in their first two matches, but have allowed six over their last two matches, including four consecutive goals after jumping out to a 1-0 lead on St. John's. Sophomore Justin Papadakis has played every minute in goal for Duke over the first four games. A first year starter, Papadakis has recorded one shutout this season and posted a 1.73 goals against average. He has registered seven saves, but also allowed seven goals.
A Win This Evening Would... improve the Demon Deacons to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC... give Wake Forest a victory in its ACC opener for the first time in three years -- a span dating back to Sept. 14, 2002... extend the Deacs winning streak to a season-high four matches... even Wake Forest at 1-1 this season on the road and improve them to 4-1 away from Spry Stadium... be the fifth victory over Duke in the last seven meetings (Deacs would be 5-1-1 over the stretch)... give the Demon Deacons a record of 4-19-3 all-time in ACC openers... improve the Deacs to 2-10-1 all-time in ACC openers on the road... improve the Deacs to 11-18-5 all-time against the Blue Devils... make the Demon Deacons 5-9-3 all-time against Duke in Durham... make the Demon Deacons 24-47-7 all-time on the road in the ACC and 13-20-3 in the Vidovich era... give 11th-year head coach Jay Vidovich his 138th career victory.
A Loss This Evening Would... drop the Demon Deacons to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the ACC... mark the third consecutive season the Deacs open ACC action with a loss... snap the Demon Deacons winning streak at three games... drop Wake Forest to 0-2 this season on the road and 3-1 away from Spry Stadium... be the second consecutive loss to the Blue Devils (Deacs would be 4-2-1 over the previous seven meetings)... give the Demon Deacons a record of 3-20-3 all-time in ACC openers... drop the Deacs to 1-11-1 all-time in ACC openers on the road... make the Deacs 10-19-5 all-time against the Blue Devils... drop the Demon Deacons 4-10-3 all-time against Duke in Durham... make the Demon Deacons 23-48-7 all-time on the road in the ACC and 12-21-3 in the Vidovich era.

Poll Position... Wake Forest was among the top 25 in each of the four polls this past week. The Demon Deacons have now spent 55 straight weeks in the top 25. Wake Forest has eight games against teams ranked in the Soccer America preseason top 20 and 10 against schools that reached the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
Moose Has Record Filled Day... Senior All-American Justin Moose had quite an afternoon against Rutgers in the Carolina Nike Classic. Moose assisted on four first-half goals as the Deacs routed Rutgers, 5-1. The four assists were not only a single-game school record, but it also tied an ACC record. Moose was the only one of the following players to accomplish the feat in a single-half:
ACC Single-Game Assist Record
| Justin Moose, WF | vs. Rutgers | 9.11.05 |
| Pablo Webster, CU | vs. Charlotte | 11.5.00 |

As if the single-game Wake Forest record and tying the ACC single-game record was enough, the four assists also moved Moose into first place on the Wake Forest all-time assist chart.
WFU Career Assists List

Solle Overshadowed... Junior Ryan Solle would have tied the school record for assists in a single-game on Sept. 11 against Rutgers has Moose not recorded four. The midfielder had three assists, raising his season total to four. Solle, who had nine assists in 2004, now has 14 career assists which ranks just outside the top 10 all-time.
Coming Out Of the Gates Fast... the Demon Deacons wasted little time in setting the tone in a pair of victories over South Carolina and Rutgers at the Carolina Nike Classic. Wake Forest scored in the eighth minute against the Gamecocks and finished with a trio of first-half goals. The Deacs were a notch better against the Scarlet Knights, scoring in the seventh minute and tallying four goals in the opening 45 minutes.
The Young Guns... When Wake Forest took the field in their season opener at Indiana, it unveiled a new look squad. Although the Demon Deacons returned five starters from last year's ACC regular season championship team, their overall collegiate experience is quite low. Wake Forest not only started four freshman in the match, but a total of six played significant minutes. In last year's NCAA quarterfinal match with VCU, the Deacons' starting lineup had a combined 453 career matches started, or an average of 41.2 a player. In the match with the Hoosiers, Wake's starting lineup only had a combined 154 starts amongst them and senior All-American Justin Moose had 53 of the starts. That is an average of 14.0 career starts per player. In addition to Sam Cronin, Jamie Franks, Michael Lahoud and Kyle Adams making their first career appearance, Mark Ellington was making just his second career start as well.
Not So Neutral... In completely neutral site regular season tournaments, as was the case last weekend at the Carolina Nike Classic, Wake Forest is a perfect 3-0 this season. In fact, the Deacs are 9-2-1 in those type matches since the 2000 season. The Demon Deacons have captured both the 2004 and 2005 Carolina Nike Classic, as well as 2001 George Mason University/Kappa Classic.
Demon Deacons on Live Television... The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Fox Soccer Channel and the Wake Forest University men's soccer program has reached an agreement to broadcast a "College Soccer Game of the Week" on Friday, November 4 against ACC rival Virginia. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m. The Demon Deacons' battle with the Cavaliers will be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel which is channel 141 on Time Warner Digital Cable in the Triad area. A slate of eight Friday night matches will feature some of the top teams in NCAA Division I soccer playing live, with telecasts scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. (EST). The first telecast is scheduled for September 16 and will feature UCLA and Penn State.
Road Warriors... the Deacons finished the 2004 season at 6-1-0 on the road and 9-2-1 away from Spry Stadium. Including this past weekend's split versus Indiana and Notre Dame, Wake Forest is 20-7-4 away from home over the past three seasons.
Anchoring the Defense... Wake Forest has allowed just two goals over its first four games. The Deacs have recorded two shutouts and went a span of 241:45 without surrendering a goal. The Demon Deacons are not only holding their opponents to very few goals, but they are not even allowing many shots. In matches against South Carolina and Rutgers at the Carolina Nike Classic, the Deacs allowed just nine shots total and only two were even on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards and the backline of freshman Lyle Adams, sophomores Julian Valentin and Pat Phelan and junior Steven Curfman have combined to post a 0.52 goals against average. Big Shoes To Fill... the Deacs lost eight seniors from a class that departed as the winningest in school history. Gone are All-American forward Scott Sealy, All-ACC midfielder Amir Lowery, James Riley, Stephen Keel, Ryan Caugherty, Matt Koh, Brent Pridgen and Tomy Szczyzpiorski. Sealy finished his Demon Deacon career as one of the most prolific scorers in school history. He finished second on the career chart for goals (43) and points (108). Sealy also finished in a tie for fourth place on the all-time assists chart with 22. He led Wake Forest last season with 17 goals, 10 assists and 44 points. For his effort, he was named 2004 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC. The Demon Deacons will also be without the services of All-American central defender Michael Parkhurst who entered the MLS SuperDraft after his junior season. Parkhurst was in the starting lineup for every match the past three years -- a span of 62 consecutive starts. He was named 2004 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC for the second consecutive year. Parkhurst was also named NSCAA All-America second team in 2003. Sealy and Parkhurst were each chosen in the first round of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, while Riley and Lowery were selected in the second and fourth rounds respectively. The Deacs were the lone school to have four players drafted in 2005. Sealy and Parkhurst are the leading candidates for MLS Rookie of the Year and Parkhurst was the lone newcomer to appear in the 2005 MLS All-Star Game. Caugherty was picked in the MLS Supplemental Draft, but is now playing professionally in Denmark, while Keel has since signed with the Colorado Rapids. In all, the class went 57-18-7 (.738) in their four years -- the most wins over four years in school history.
Moose Named To Hermann Trophy Watch List... Wake Forest senior forward Justin Moose was placed on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. A total of 25 of the nation's finest college soccer players were mentioned. Moose joins former Demon Deacons Brian Carroll (2002), William Hesmer (2003), Jeremiah White (2003) and Michael Parkhurst (2004) as candidates for college soccer's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy. Moose, a native of Statesville, N.C., was the Deacs' second-ever NSCAA first team All-America selection in 2004. He was named to the NSCAA All-South first team after being awarded second team in 2003. Moose was second on Wake Forest in points (19) and goals (7). He also earned All-ACC second team in 2004.
Four Wake Forest Freshmen Recognized By College Soccer News... The quartet of Cline Beam, Sam Cronin, Jamie Franks and Marcus Tracy were honored by College Soccer News as four of the nation's top 100 impact freshmen. Beam, a native of Augusta, Ga., was a NSCAA Youth All-American in 2003 and 2004, attended the adidas ESP Camp and was a member of the 1986 Region III ODP squad. Cronin, a Winston-Salem product, was also a NSCAA Youth All-American last season at Mount Tabor HS. Franks, a native of Medford, N.J., was New Jersey High School Player of the Year, a Parade High School All-American and was twice named NSCAA Youth All-American. Franks has also suited up for the U.S. Under-18 National Team. Tracy, a Newtown, Conn. product, was named Parade High School All-American and was the Connecticut High School Player of the Year.
Moose Named 2005 All-Premier Development League... Senior Justin Moose was named to the 2005 Premier Development All-League Team as announced by the United Soccer League. The honor recognizes 11 of the best players in the PDL for the past regular season as voted on by team coaches and general managers. Moose is one of two players on the All-League Team representing a club that missed the postseason. He was named to the All-Conference Team for the second consecutive year and makes his All-League debut. Moose helped lead Carolina within a point of the playoffs at 9-6-1. He scored nine goals and dished out four assists in 15 games. He registered seven goals and two assists in 13 games last season for the Dynamo.
Another ACC Regular Season Title... Wake Forest captured the 2004 ACC Regular Season Championship -- its second in the past three years.
Model Of Consistency... after finishing the 2004 season with a 14-5-2 record, Wake Forest has eclipsed the 10-win plateau for 11 consecutive seasons -- all under current head coach Jay Vidovich.
