Clemson, S.C. - Freshman Shannan Homan nailed 10 kills en route to the team-high .421 hitting percentage, but the Wake Forest volleyball team fell in five games to Clemson in the ACC opener, Thursday night. The win drops the Demon Deacons to 7-3 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
Junior Lauren Peterson had the team-high 16 kills, while Natasha Schaefer led the team defensively with 17 digs.
The two teams kept it close in the first game, tying the score eight times. It wasn't until the 24-22 mark that the Tigers jumped ahead with a five point run. Wake came back with two more points, but an attack error on the Deacs gave Clemson the first game, 30-24.
In the second game the score was tied six times until the 10 all mark. At that point, the Deacs jumped out to a three point lead and held onto it until the Tigers crept back at 22 all. Another three point run gave the Deacs the advantage that they needed and helped them close the game, 30-25.
The game was much tighter in the third with the two teams tying the score 15 times and the lead changing hands seven times. It wasn't until the 27-26 mark that Wake Forest was able to take three consecutive points, helping them win the game, 30-27. The fourth game was much like the third with the two teams battling back and forth. Unfortunately the Tigers ended up taking it, 30-27.
Clemson jumped out to a quick and early lead in the fifth game and Wake was unable to recover. Only playing to 15, the Demon Deacons dropped the heartbreaker, 15-8.
On the night, the Demon Deacons put up 63 kills to the Tigers 78.
Wake Forest will return to action tomorrow night against Georgia Tech. Game time in Atlanta, Ga. is set for 7 p.m.
