Winston-Salem, N.C. - The eighth-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team shutout Virginia Tech, 4-0, on Sunday. The Demon Deacons move to 6-2-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play.
The Deacs took an early 1-0 lead when defender Jayme Leigh Cargnoni netted a goal in the 10th minute of the match. The junior intercepted a Hokie clearing attempt and dribbled the ball to the top of the box. Cargnoni fired a shot that was deflected past the diving Virginia Tech goalkeeper, Mallory Soldner. The goal was the junior's first on the year and third in her Demon Deacon career.
Cargnoni came up big on the defensive end in the 29th minute when she made a defensive save on a Virginia Tech shot that was headed in the goal. The Hokies rebounded the shot but junior keeper Kaitlyn Doe made a second save to preserve the lead.
In the second half, the Deacons extended the lead to 2-0 when Elizabeth Remy netted her fourth goal of the year in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Megan Upchurch fed a pass to senior Melanie Schneider who dribbled the ball up the right side of the field. Schneider fed a pass into the box where Remy beat the defender and knocked in the goal.
Two minutes later, the Deacs added a third goal when senior Sarah Kozey notched her fifth goal of the season. Kozey battled a Hokie defender down the left sideline and ultimately won the ball. The forward dribbled towards the top of the box, juked the defender, planted and fired a shot into the back of the net.
The final Deacon tally came in the 78th minute when junior midfielder Lindsey Jaco kicked in a shot from right in front of the goal off a corner kick. Cargnoni served the corner to the far post and Jaco squeezed it past the keeper for the 4-0 advantage.
Doe recorded three saves in the game. She played 70:45 in the match before sophomore keeper Heather Currie entered to finish the contest. Currie managed five saves.
"A different team came out tonight," said head coach Tony da Luz. "Emotionally, kids were up for the game from the start. We pressed, got great pressure on the ball and it was a much better team effort tonight. We finished our chances and that's how we have to play in the ACC to win."
Wake Forest will travel to Maryland and Boston College next weekend. The Deacons will play the Terps on Friday and the Eagles on Sunday. The next home contest will be against NC State on Thursday, October 6. The match against the Wolfpack will kick off at 7 p.m.
