College Park, Md. - The 11th-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team lost to Maryland, 1-0, Friday night. With the loss, the Demon Deacons fall to 6-3-1 and 1-2-0 in the ACC.
The Terrapins scored the match's only goal when Nataly Arias scored in the 66th minute. Arias scored on a long shot that found the back of the net. Wake Forest junior keeper Kaitlyn Doe could not make a save as the ball found the top of the goal.
The Deacons were unable to capitalize on many chances throughout the match. The Deacs took 21 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Maryland keeper Nikki Resnick shut down the Wake Forest attack registering 10 saves.
Junior forward Elizabeth Remy led the Deacons with five shots, four of which were on goal. Seniors Melanie Schneider and Sarah Kozey each registered four shots in the loss. Freshman Camelyn Dillon, three shots, and junior Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, two shots, also tallied multiple shots for Wake Forest.
"We played well and created some good chances," said head coach Tony da Luz. "We had a lot of possession, but they scored on their one opportunity. We just weren't sharp putting away our chances and that killed us."
For the match, Wake Forest outshot Maryland by a 21-10 margin, including a 10-1 advantage of shots on goal. Kozey and sophomore defender Nichole Lecznar each received yellow cards in the contest.
Wake Forest will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to battle seventh-ranked Boston College on Sunday. The match will kick off at 1:00 p.m. The meeting marks the first between the two programs. The Deacs will then return home to face in-state ACC foe NC State on Thursday, October 6. The match at Spry Stadium will kick off at 7 p.m.
