Demon Deacons Travel To College Park For Showdown With No. 17 Terrapins... riding a three-match winning streak, No. 11 Wake Forest will hit the road this weekend for a match with No. 17 Maryland. Kickoff is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m.
The Demon Deacons defeated Maryland, 4-2, in Winston-Salem last season, but the Terps were victorious in 2003, 1-0. In fact, the home team has captured the last three matches and four of the past five meetings (Deacons tied at Maryland, 2-2, in 2001). Wake Forest is 4-5-3 all-time in College Park, but just 1-3-1 in its last five trips to Ludwig Field.
Scouting the Terps... Maryland enters the important ACC battle with a 6-3-0 overall record and 1-1-0 in the ACC. The Terrapins, who slipped in all four polls this week after losing consecutive matches, rebounded with a 1-0 victory over William & Mary on Tuesday.
Prior to the two-game losing streak, Maryland had won four consecutive matches, including a 3-1 win over Santa Clara and 3-0 victories over Virginia Commonwealth, Clemson and St. Bonaventure
All-American candidate Jason Garey leads the team with 17 points and eight goals. Garey became the Terps all-time leader with 46 career goals. Stephen King is second on Maryland in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12). Craig Salvati has started seven games in goal, with 20 saves, a 0.97 goals against average and two shutouts, but Chris Seitz started in net on Tuesday against the Tribe and recorded a shutout.

A Win This Evening Would... improve the Deacons to 7-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the ACC... make the Deacs 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings with Maryland... give Wake Forest its first victory over Maryland in College Park since Oct. 23, 1999 (Deacons defeated Terps, 2-1, in OT)... improve the Deacs to 13-12-3 all-time against the Terps... even the Demon Deacons at 5-5-3 all-time against Maryland in College Park... make the Demon Deacons 24-48-7 all-time on the road in the ACC and 13-21-3 in the Vidovich era... give 12th-year head coach Jay Vidovich his 141st career victory.
A Loss This Evening Would... drop the Deacons to 6-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the ACC... make the Deacs 4-2-1 in the last seven meetings with Maryland... be the second straight loss for Wake Forest against Maryland in College Park (Terps blanked Deacs, 1-0, in 2003)... drop the Demon Deacons to 12-13-3 all-time against the Terps... drop the Deacons to 4-6-3 all-time against Maryland in College Park... make Wake Forest 23-49-7 all-time on the road in the ACC and 12-22-3 in the Vidovich era... deny 12th-year head coach Jay Vidovich his 141st career victory.
Moose Record Update... Senior All-American Justin Moose scored a goal and added an assist in the 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech on Sept. 23. The goal was Moose's second of the season and 13th of his career. With three points on the evening, the forward moved into a tie with Kyle Bachmeier for eighth place on the all-time scoring list with 52 career points.
Solle Named National Player of the Week... Ryan Solle was named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week on Sept. 27. The junior midfielder was also selected to the Soccer America and College Soccer News National Team of the Week. The native of Broadway, N.C., continued his torrid start to the 2005 season. The co-captain added four assists in victories over St. Joseph's and Virginia Tech. Solle had three assists in the 5-0 rout of the Hawks. It was the second time this season the midfielder had posted three in one game.
More On Solle... He leads the team, ACC and country with 10 assists and has registered at least one in six consecutive matches. The 10 assists not only give him 20 for his career, which is tied for sixth on the all-time assist list, but also equals the Wake Forest single-season school record for assists. He is only the fourth player in program history to reach the 10 assist plateau in one season and Solle has accomplished the feat in just eight games.
Single-Season Assists
1. Vicente Bastidas 2001 10
Scott Sealy 2004 10
Gary Kingsley 1981 10
Ryan Solle 2005 10
5. Ryan Solle 2004 9
Kyle Bachmeier 1997 9
Neil Covone 1989 9
Rob Burt 1980 9
Greg Heileman 1980 9
Poll Position... Wake Forest was among the top 25 in each of the four polls this past week. The Demon Deacons have now spent 57 straight weeks in the top 25 -- a streak that dates back to the preseason poll of 2002. Quite Stingy... The Deacs outshot Saint Joseph's, 20-0, on Sept. 20. The zero shots at least ties a school record for shots allowed in a match, but game records are incomplete prior to the 1984 season. Wake Forest previously held Connecticut to a single shot on Aug. 29 of 2003.
Ellington Stepping Up... Junior forward Mark Ellington leads Wake Forest in points (13) and goals (6). He also ranks third in the ACC in those same categories and had scored in five consecutive games before the streak ended against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 27. In his first two years with the Deacs, Ellington started just a single match and scored only three goals.
Solle Not To Be Overshadowed... Junior Ryan Solle would have tied the school record for assists in a single-game on Sept. 11 against Rutgers with three had senior Justin Moose not recorded four that afternoon. Solle nearly turned the task again just over a week later. The captain recorded three more assists in the 5-0 rout of Saint Joseph's on Sept. 20.
Moose Has Record Filled Day... Senior All-American Justin Moose had quite an afternoon against Rutgers in the Carolina Nike Classic. Moose assisted on four first-half goals as the Deacs routed Rutgers, 5-1. The four assists were not only a single-game school record, but it also tied an ACC record. Moose was the only one of the following players to accomplish the feat in a single-half:
ACC Single-Game Assist Record
Justin Moose, WF vs. Rutgers 9.11.05
Pablo Webster, CU vs. Charlotte 11.5.00
Eric Quill, CU vs. UNC Asheville 9.1.96
Rivers Guthrie, CU vs. Mercer 9.14.94
Miles Joseph, CU vs. Francis Marion 9.28.93
Mark Knich, CU vs. Erskine 10.7.92
Damian Silvera, UVA vs. UNC 9.27.92
T.D. Rolf, Duke vs. Guilford College 10.2.91
Richie Williams, UVA vs. VCU 9.13.89
Kris Kelderman, UVA vs. College of Charleston 9.10.89
Tom Kain, Duke vs. William and Mary 10.2.83
Ricky Marvin, UNC vs. Charlotte 9.10.80
Steve Scott, UNC vs. Charlotte 10.29.77
Chick Cudlip, UVA vs. Washington & Lee 11.13.62
As if the single-game Wake Forest record and tying the ACC single-game record were not enough, the four assists also moved Moose into first place on the Wake Forest all-time assist chart.

Coming Out Of the Gates Fast... the Demon Deacons wasted little time in setting the tone in a pair of victories over South Carolina and Rutgers at the Carolina Nike Classic. But, Wake Forest took its prowess for scoring early to another level on Sept. 23 against Virginia Tech. Justin Moose scored just 1:49 into the match, the quickest goal for a Demon Deacon team since Oct. 19, 2003 when former Deacon Amir Lowery scored only 1:25 into the match. The Deacs scored in the eighth minute against the Gamecocks and finished with a trio of first-half goals. The Deacs were a notch better against the Scarlet Knights, scoring in the seventh minute and tallying four goals in the opening 45 minutes. Including Tuesday night's match with Florida Atlantic, the Deacs have scored first in six consecutive matches.
The Young Guns... When Wake Forest took the field in their season opener at Indiana, it unveiled a new look squad. Although the Demon Deacons returned five starters from last year's ACC regular season championship team, their overall collegiate experience is quite low. Wake Forest not only started four freshman in the match, but a total of six played significant minutes. In last year's NCAA quarterfinal match with VCU, the Deacons' starting lineup had a combined 453 career matches started, or an average of 41.2 a player. In the match with the Hoosiers, Wake's starting lineup only had a combined 154 starts amongst them and senior All-American Justin Moose had 53 of the starts. That is an average of 14.0 career starts per player. In addition to Sam Cronin, Jamie Franks, Michael Lahoud and Kyle Adams making their first career appearance, Mark Ellington was making just his second career start as well.
Not So Neutral... In completely neutral site regular season tournaments, as was the case at the Carolina Nike Classic, Wake Forest is a perfect 3-0 this season. In fact, the Deacs are 9-2-1 in those type matches since the 2000 season. The Demon Deacons have captured both the 2004 and 2005 Carolina Nike Classic, as well as 2001 George Mason University/Kappa Classic.
Demon Deacons on Live Television... The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Fox Soccer Channel and the Wake Forest University men's soccer program has reached an agreement to broadcast a "College Soccer Game of the Week" on Friday, November 4 against ACC rival Virginia. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Demon Deacons' battle with the Cavaliers will be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel which is channel 141 on Time Warner Digital Cable in the Triad area.
A slate of eight Friday night matches will feature some of the top teams in NCAA Division I soccer playing live, with telecasts scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. (EST). The first telecast is scheduled for September 16 and will feature UCLA and Penn State.
Road Warriors... the Deacons finished the 2004 season at 6-1-0 on the road and 9-2-1 away from Spry Stadium. Including 2005, Wake Forest is 20-8-4 away from home over the past three seasons.
Anchoring the Defense... Wake Forest has allowed six goals over its first eight games. The Deacs have recorded four shutouts and went a span of 241:45 without surrendering a goal. In fact, Wake Forest did not allow St. Joseph's a single shot over the entire match. In matches against South Carolina and Rutgers at the Carolina Nike Classic, the Deacs allowed just nine shots total and only two were even on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards and the backline of freshman Lyle Adams, sophomores Julian Valentin and Pat Phelan and junior Steven Curfman have combined to post a 0.73 goals against average.
Big Shoes To Fill... the Deacs lost eight seniors from a class that departed as the winningest in school history. Gone are All-American forward Scott Sealy, All-ACC midfielder Amir Lowery, James Riley, Stephen Keel, Ryan Caugherty, Matt Koh, Brent Pridgen and Tomy Szczyzpiorski.
Sealy finished his Demon Deacon career as one of the most prolific scorers in school history. He finished second on the career chart for goals (43) and points (108). Sealy also finished in a tie for fourth place on the all-time assists chart with 22. He led Wake Forest last season with 17 goals, 10 assists and 44 points. For his effort, he was named 2004 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC.
The Demon Deacons will also be without the services of All-American central defender Michael Parkhurst who entered the MLS SuperDraft after his junior season. Parkhurst was in the starting lineup for every match the past three years -- a span of 62 consecutive starts. He was named 2004 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-ACC for the second consecutive year. Parkhurst was also named NSCAA All-America second team in 2003.
Sealy and Parkhurst were each chosen in the first round of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, while Riley and Lowery were selected in the second and fourth rounds respectively. The Deacs were the lone school to have four players drafted in 2005. Sealy and Parkhurst are the leading candidates for MLS Rookie of the Year and Parkhurst was the lone newcomer to appear in the 2005 MLS All-Star Game. Caugherty was picked in the MLS Supplemental Draft, but is now playing professionally in Denmark, while Keel has since signed with the Colorado Rapids.
In all, the class went 57-18-7 (.738) in their four years -- the most wins over four years in school history.
Moose Named To Hermann Trophy Watch List... Wake Forest senior forward Justin Moose was placed on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. A total of 25 of the nation's finest college soccer players were mentioned. Moose joins former Demon Deacons Brian Carroll (2002), William Hesmer (2003), Jeremiah White (2003) and Michael Parkhurst (2004) as candidates for college soccer's equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.
Moose, a native of Statesville, N.C., was the Deacs' second-ever NSCAA first team All-America selection in 2004. He was named to the NSCAA All-South first team after being awarded second team in 2003. Moose was second on Wake Forest in points (19) and goals (7). He also earned All-ACC second team in 2004.
Four Wake Forest Freshmen Recognized By College Soccer News... The quartet of Cline Beam, Sam Cronin, Jamie Franks and Marcus Tracy were honored by College Soccer News as four of the nation's top 100 impact freshmen.
Beam, a native of Augusta, Ga., was a NSCAA Youth All-American in 2003 and 2004, attended the adidas ESP Camp and was a member of the 1986 Region III ODP squad. Cronin, a Winston-Salem product, was also a NSCAA Youth All-American last season at Mount Tabor HS. Franks, a native of Medford, N.J., was New Jersey High School Player of the Year, a Parade High School All-American and was twice named NSCAA Youth All-American. Franks has also suited up for the U.S. Under-18 National Team. Tracy, a Newtown, Conn. product, was named Parade High School All-American and was the Connecticut High School Player of the Year.
Moose Named 2005 All-Premier Development League... Senior Justin Moose was named to the 2005 Premier Development All-League Team as announced by the United Soccer League. The honor recognizes 11 of the best players in the PDL for the past regular season as voted on by team coaches and general managers.
Moose is one of two players on the All-League Team representing a club that missed the postseason. He was named to the All-Conference Team for the second consecutive year and makes his All-League debut. Moose helped lead Carolina within a point of the playoffs at 9-6-1. He scored nine goals and dished out four assists in 15 games. He registered seven goals and two assists in 13 games last season for the Dynamo.
Another ACC Regular Season Title... Wake Forest captured the 2004 ACC Regular Season Championship -- its second in the past three years.
Model Of Consistency... after finishing the 2004 season with a 14-5-2 record, Wake Forest has eclipsed the 10-win plateau for 11 consecutive seasons -- all under current head coach Jay Vidovich.
