Winston-Salem, N.C. -- - The Wake Forest volleyball team played the fourth game into extra points pushing the match into five and three players had double-digit kills, but the North Carolina Tar Heels won the final game to defeat the Demon Deacons, 3-2 (36-34, 30-16, 30-26, 30-32, 15-9) Friday night in Reynolds Gym.
Redshirt freshman Jessica Furlong led the Deacs with the match-high 22 kills and 17 digs. Senior Christy Williams had 11 kills with just one error for the team high .345 attack percentage. Lauren Peterson rounded out the double-digit kills with 18 in addition to adding 10 digs.
In the first game the score was tied 15 times and the lead changed hands five. At one point the Deacs trailed by five but they fought back and tied it once again. Pushing the game past the 30-point mark, the teams tied it four more times until a pair of kills by Carolina's Christie Clark gave the Tar Heels game one.
The second game was much different, with the Tar Heels having just six kills to the Deacs 16. Jumping out to a commanding 16-7 lead, Wake Forest steamrolled North Carolina, 30-16. In the third game Carolina woke up and earned the lead with a five point run at 11-10. From that point, the Deacs tried to catch up, but couldn't.
The fourth was much like the first with the lead changing hands six times. Once again putting the game into extra points, a block by Willliams and then an attack error on the Heels gave the Deacs the advantage and the game, 32-30.
In the final game of the night the Tar Heels jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and despite a valiant effort, the Deacs fell, 15-9.
Defensively, the Deacs dominated with six players earning double-digit digs. Natasha Schaefer led the charge with a career-high 32, while Furlong followed with 17. At the net, Williams had five of the team's 16 block assists and three of the four solo blocks.
Wake Forest, now 7-4 and 0-3 in the conference, will host NC State Saturday night at 6 p.m.
