Winston-Salem, N.C. - The 21st-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of play to down San Diego, 5-1, in the Wake Forest/ACC/WCC Challenge. The Demon Deacons move to 3-0-1 on the season, while the Toreros fall to 2-2-0.
Senior Sarah Kozey put the Deacons on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when she netted a one-on-one goal through San Diego goalkeeper Brittany Cameron's legs. The forward from Halifax, Nova Scotia received a pass from freshman Camelyn Dillon and fired a shot to the back of the net. The goal marked Kozey's second on the season and 29th in her career. With 29 goals, Kozey tied former Deacon Emily Taggart on top of the school's career goals list.
In the 32nd minute, the Deacons added their second goal of the match when forward Taylor Toombs netted a shot from 15 yards out. Junior Kristen Kemp served a ball to sophomore Ashley Spooner who fed a pass to a wide open Toombs. The junior fired the shot past the keeper to give the Deacs a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, San Diego cut into the Deacon lead when Lee Klopschinski scored off a rebound. Torero senior Michelle Rowe fired a shot that Deacon keeper Kaitlyn Doe saved, but Klopschinski was there for the put back.
In the 76th minute, Deacon junior Elizabeth Remy scored her third goal of the season when she knocked a shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Torero keeper Karen Cook was unable to reach the ball. Sophomore Megan Upchurch and senior Melanie Schneider each earned assists on the goal.
Schneider got into the scoring just five minutes later when she scored a one-on-one goal from 18 yards out. The Peachtree City, Ga., native tallied her first goal on the year. The play was set up by a Kristina Hanley slide tackle at midfield. The sophomore midfielder then found Kozey who beat the defense and was open on the right side of the box. Kozey fed the ball to Schneider at the top, and the goal gave the Deacons a 4-1 advantage.
Wake Forest's final goal came when freshman Whitney Berry scored with just under four minutes left in the match. Fellow freshman Amanda Lebo fired a shot that was deflected, and Berry netted the rebound. Lebo was credited with her second assist on the year.
Once again, the Deacon defense was stellar in limiting the Toreros to just five shots in the match. Jayme Leigh Cargnoni, Keisha Garrick, Nichole Lecznar, and Upchurch continued their strong play over the weekend in the back.
"It was a great Friday-Sunday performance," said head coach Tony da Luz. "The double-overtime game against Santa Clara was a very taxing game, and we came back today and really had a lot of energy. We played well as a team and created a lot of attacking chances. We were solid in the back. I thought Kaitlyn Doe had a great weekend in the goal. Everybody pitched in; it was a great team effort."
Wake Forest will travel to play Washington State and Oregon State next weekend. The Deacons will then return to North Carolina to play at UNC Greensboro on Sept. 16. The next home match will be Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 pm against No. 4 Virginia.
