JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - For the third time this fall, Wake Forest's golf team shot its lowest score in the final round as the Demon Deacons finished fifth out of 15 teams at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate here Sunday.

Wake Forest shot a 1-over 289 over the final 18 holes at the difficult par 72, 7,147-yard The Ridges Golf Club to finish 13 strokes out of the lead. The Deacons had a freshman, sophomore and junior all finish in the top 21.

Tennessee shot a final-round 3-under par to edge the host school, East Tennessee State, for the team title. The Volunteers finished 5-over par, followed by ETSU (+6), North Carolina (+10), No. 1-ranked Alabama (+11) and Wake Forest (+18). The Deacons finished ahead of three ACC opponents.

East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies shot a 1-under 71 today to win the individual crown by three strokes over Tennessee's Phillip Petitt.

Wake Forest is gaining a reputation as a final-round team. The Deacons have saved their best for the last round in all but one tournament this fall. Wake's 1-over today was eight strokes better than its second round. All six Deacons, including freshman Travis Wadkins who played as an individual, shot 74 or better today.

Freshman Brendan Gielow shot a 73 today to finish the 54-hole tournament 3-over par and in ninth place. Sophomore Dustin Groves, who fired a 2-under 70 today, and junior Chris McCartin tied for 21st place at 6-over.

Junior Webb Simpson overcame a disastrous second round with a 73 today to finish the tournament 10-over and tied for 42nd place. Sophomore Marc Gladson, who had an eagle today, also shot 73 in the final round to finish 11-over and tied for 49th.

Wadkins improved his score each day. After shooting a 91 in the opening round, Wadkins went 78-74 over the final 36 holes to finish 27-over for the tournament.

Wake Forest will return to action Oct. 22-24 at the Isleworth Invitational in Orlando.
