WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The Wake Forest men's soccer team improved its non-conference record to a perfect 10-0 on Wednesday night by defeating backyard rival UNC-Greensboro by a 3-0 margin. All three scores came in the first half of action as the Deacons set a new season high with 23 total shots.
Senior Ryan Solle put the Deacs (13-2-1) on the board with a penalty kick in the 19th minute of action. After UNCG (10-6-1) defender Henning Jonasson brought down freshman Zack Schilawski from behind just inside the edge of the penalty box, the head referee pointed to the spot and the preseason All-American put Wake ahead for good. Jonasson was also issued a red card and consequently ejected from the game.
With the man advantage in tow, the Deacons were able to apply constant pressure in their attacking third of the field. Nine minutes later, freshman Austin da Luz played a beautiful ball down the left side to a streaking Solle who subsequently fired a cross over to an unmarked Schilawski. The freshman made no mistake and put a snap header on the ball past the goalie for his third goal of the season.
Just four minutes later, sophomore Evan Brown found senior Steven Curfman 25 yards out in front of goal. The Raleigh, N.C., native turned and drilled a brilliant ball that swerved past the goalie and into the back of the net. The goal was Curfman's fourth on the year, giving him 13 total points and a tie for the team lead with Solle.
The shutout was the 10th of the season for junior Brian Edwards, breaking his own school record and dropping his goals against average to just 0.78. The Deacons' backline made sure the Charlotte, N.C., native was largely untested, but he did come up big to make three saves on the night
Next up for the Deacons will be the home regular season finale against NC State Saturday night at Spry Stadium with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Senior night ceremonies will be conducted to honor the team's five departing members, Steven Curfman, Bobby Davis, Mark Ellington, Ryan Solle, and Wells Thompson.
