ORLANDO, Fla. - Wake Forest, playing without junior All-American Webb Simpson, struggled to a 19-over par 307 in the opening round of the 54-hole Isleworth Invitational here Monday and the Deacons find themselves in 17th place out of 18 strong teams.

Simpson, the two-time All-ACC selection, broke a bone in his hand last week and will not play again until December.

The par 72, 7,544-yard course at Isleworth Golf Club proved to be a difficult layout for some of college golf's top teams. None of the 18 teams broke par in the opening round and Wake Forest, despite its 17th-place standing, is just 16 strokes out of the lead.

Georgia (+3) leads South Carolina (+4) by one stroke and Tennessee (+5) by two strokes as SEC teams hold the top three positions. Texas, Oklahoma State and Florida are all 6-over and tied for fourth place. There are six ACC teams in the field, including Duke and North Carolina, which are tied for eighth place.

Wake Forest, ranked 20th, was led by sophomore Dustin Groves and junior Chris McCartin, both of whom shot 3-over par 75 today and are tied for 39th. Freshman Brendan Gielow played the final six holes 2-under par, helping to overcome an uncharacteristic stretch of three double-bogies in four holes. Gielow finished the day with a 5-over 77.

Sophomore Marc Gladson, who had a wild front nine of 41 that included just one par, shot an 8-over 80 today. Senior Sean Moore bogied four of the final five holes en route to an 11-over 83.

Florida's Toby Ragland leads the individual race after firing a 3-under 69. Five players are one stroke back at 2-under.

The second round is scheduled for Monday and the final 18 holes come on Tuesday.
