CLEMSON, S.C. - Wake Forest could not muster enough offense to keep up with a talented Clemson squad, as the Tigers swept the season series from the Demon Deacons with a three-game victory Friday evening at Jervey Gym. The Tigers defeated the Deacs 30-21, 30-16, 30-21.
With the loss, Wake Forest drops to 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the ACC. Clemson improves to 14-6 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
Clemson was able to win the battle at the net, as the Tigers collected 20 total blocks to the Deacs' nine. Wake Forest hit just .073 for the match, with 34 kills and 26 errors in 109 attempts. The Tigers, on the other hand, hit .265 with 48 kills and 17 errors in 117 attempts.
Sophomore Natalie Mullikin was tops for the Demon Deacons with 10 kills, while senior Lauren Peterson and junior Jackie Lucas chipped in five kills apiece.
Senior Natasha Schaefer led all players with 16 digs on the night.
Freshman Dylan Faulkner dished out 23 assists, in addition to recording six digs, a service ace and a block solo.
Mullikin, Lucas and sophomore Shannan Homan each tallied a pair of block assists.
Clemson never trailed in game one, building an early 8-3 lead. The Tigers increased their lead to 15-8 before the Demon Deacons used a 6-2 run to pull within three at 17-14.
However, Clemson followed with a 10-1 run, including a string of six unanswered points, to take a sizable 27-17 lead. The Tigers held off the Deacs for the 30-21 opening-game victory.
It was the same story in game two, as Clemson built an early 9-3 lead and never looked back. The Tigers gradually increased their lead throughout the contest before coming away with a convincing 30-16 win.
Wake Forest took the opening point in game three for its only lead of the game, but it was all Clemson after that. The Tigers raced out to a 13-4 lead and held steady the rest of the way, earning a 30-21 win and getting a three-game sweep over the Deacs.
Wake has now lost three straight matches and is 2-5 on the road this season.
With the win, Clemson sweeps the season series from Wake Forest. It is the first time since the 1999 campaign that the Demon Deacons have lost two matches to the Tigers in a single season.
Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow when it plays at Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. The Demon Deacons are looking to sweep the season series over the Yellow Jackets after picking up a three-game win at home earlier this fall. The match with the Yellow Jackets will be broadcast live on www.ACCSelect.com.
