WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- There was very little movement on the second day of the PING/Golfweek Preview here Tuesday and that wasn't the best of news for 25th-ranked Wake Forest, which remained in 14th place with just Wednesday's 18 holes remaining.
All 15 teams are finding the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, which will host the 2007 NCAA Championship, extremely difficult. No teams and only nine of 75 individuals are under par on the par 70, 6,809-yard layout.
Wake Forest improved its score by five strokes, from 296 to 291, and junior Webb Simpson fired a 1-under par 69, but the Deacons remained at 14th place through the second round. On the bright side for the Deacons, they are only five shots out of 10th place on a tightly-packed scoreboard.
Florida and Oklahoma State, both 2-over par for the tournament are tied for the team lead heading into Wednesday's final round. Texas A&M (+3) and UNLV (+3) are just one shot out and Georgia (+8) is in fifth place.
Clemson (+12), Georgia Tech (+25) and Wake Forest (+26) represent the ACC.
Simpson moved up the leader board into a tie for 18th place after his round of 69 today. Two-over for the tournament, Simpson had five birdies in Tuesday's round, which was hurt by a double-bogey on the 12th hole. Wake junior Chris McCartin shot his second straight solid round of 2-over 72 and is 4-over for the tournament. Freshman Brendan Gielow followed his opening round of 77with a 73 today and is 10-over. Sophomore Dustin Groves is 11-over and senior Sean Moore is 20-over par.
Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin leads the individual race with a two-day score of 4-under. Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie and Arizona State's Niklas Lemke are both one shot back.
