Demon Deacons Roll Past Virginia in Three Games

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest earned its fourth straight victory and fifth in its last six matches, rolling past Virginia in three games Saturday evening at Reynolds Gymnasium. The Demon Deacons defeated the Cavaliers 30-18, 30-27, 30-23.
With the win, Wake moves to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. Virginia, who dropped both of its weekend matches after falling at Duke on Friday, falls to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
The Deacons came out on fire in game one and never looked back from there. Wake hit an amazing .560 in the first game, while holding Virginia to a .000 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Jessica Furlong had six of her 13 kills in the first stanza, while junior Jackie Lucas registered four of her seven total kills in game one.
Wake never let Virginia have a chance in the first game, as the Deacs got out to an early 10-4 lead. The home squad increased its lead to 22-10 and then cruised to the 30-18 victory.
Game two was much closer, but the Deacons seemingly held control for most of the period after falling behind early.
The Cavaliers scored the game's first five points before Wake rallied with a 9-2 run to take a 9-7 lead.
The Deacs increased their lead to as much as four but had to stave off a Cavalier rally late. With Wake holding game point at 29-24, Virginia scored three straight points to pull within two. After Wake Forest called a timeout to re-group, senior Lauren Peterson put the game away with a kill.
Wake Forest again held Virginia to a .000 hitting percentage for the second straight game. Junior Jackie Lucas led the defense at the net with two block solos in the game.
The Demon Deacons had the match in hand from the start of game three. With the scored tied 4-4, Wake used an 11-6 run to pull away from Virginia.
The Cavaliers rallied back from a 19-13 deficit, going on an 8-3 run to pull within one at 22-21. However, Wake Forest out-scored Virginia 8-2 the rest of the way for the 30-23 win.
Furlong led all players with 13 kills. Lucas and sophomores Shannan Homan and Natalie Mullikin chipped in seven kills apiece.
Freshman Dylan Faulkner dished out 38 assists and also had three total blocks including one block solo.
Senior Natasha Schaefer had a game-high 13 digs, while Faulkner joined her in double figures with 10 digs.
The Demon Deacons tallied a total of seven block solos, led by Lucas' two. Lucas and Mullikin each had four total blocks in the match.
The Wake defense held Virginia to a .016 hitting percentage for the match
The win snapped Wake Forest's four-match losing streak to Virginia, dating back to the 2004 season.

The Demon Deacons will play another home doubleheader next weekend, hosting Maryland on Friday and Boston College on Saturday.
