COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Wake Forest snapped a two-match losing streak and earned a season sweep of Maryland for the first time since 2001 as the Demon Deacons picked up a four-game win over the Terrapins Sunday afternoon. Wake defeated Maryland 30-20, 30-25, 30-32, 30-27.
The win moves the Deacons to 14-13 overall and 10-8 in the ACC. The 10 conference wins ties the program record for ACC victories in a single season.
Senior Lauren Peterson and sophomore Natalie Mullikin led the Wake attack with 15 kills apiece. Sophomore Jessica Furlong was not far behind with 13 kills. Mullikin had a solid day hitting, as she finished at .444 (three errors, 27 attempts).
Freshman Dylan Faulkner notched a double-double on the afternoon with 50 assists and 12 digs.
Senior libero Natasha Schaefer had a game-high 13 digs, while fellow senior Jenna Doane joined Schaefer in double digits with 12 digs.
Mullikin turned in a team-high eight total blocks, including five block assists. Junior Jackie Lucas tallied seven blocks, five of which were solo.
The Demon Deacons were in control of the match during the first two games. After Maryland took the first point in game one, it was all Wake from there. The Deacs doubled-up the Terps 8-4 to start and eventually built the lead up to 17-8.
Maryland followed with six straight points to pull within three, 17-14. However, the Deacons used an 11-4 run to go up 10 at 28-18 before earning the 30-20 victory.
Wake Forest fell behind 7-3 early in game two but came back with eight straight points to take an 11-7 lead.
After the Terrapins tied it up at 14-14, the Deacs went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-15 lead they would not relinquish.
Maryland never trailed in game three, building a 14-6 margin out of the gates. The Terps steadily held that lead until they took match point at 29-24.
Wake Forest responded with five unanswered points to tie the contest at 29-29. The two squads traded points before the Terps scored the final two for the 32-30 win.
The Demon Deacons pulled away late in game four to stifle any Maryland thoughts of a five-game comeback. Trailing 20-19, Wake scored four straight points to go up 23-20.
The Terrapins came back to pull within one, but the Deacs took the final two points for the 30-28 win.
It was Wake Forest's second win over Maryland this season, giving the Deacs a season sweep of the Terps for the first time since the 2001 season. The Demon Deacons have now won three straight over the Terrapins.
Wake Forest returns to action next weekend when it travels to Virginia and Virginia Tech looking for season sweeps of both squads. The Demon Deacons will take on the Cavaliers Friday at 7 p.m. and the Hokies Saturday at 7 p.m. The Deacs return home the following week to host Florida State and Miami.
